Seventy years of Italian woodworking, still run by one family.

ALF began in 1951 as the Artigiana Legno Francenigo, a cooperative of woodworkers in the village of Francenigo, in the Treviso countryside north of Venice. In 1957 brothers Eugenio and Oliviero Piovesana took it over. Oliviero ran sales and planning and Eugenio ran the workshop. The second generation runs it today: Maria Cristina and Piero Piovesana, with Flavio Da Frè leading product design and R&D.

Oliviero's rule for selling was simple: “you have to go in person.” ALF grew from Italian trade fairs to Cologne and Paris in the 1970s. In the 1980s it came to America, and it now exports to more than 90 countries. Its specialty is the coordinated bedroom: a bed, nightstands, dresser, chest, mirror and wardrobe made to match in one finish.

Planning guide

How to choose your ALF bedroom.

1. 1. Measure the room, not just the mattress.ALF Queen beds are about 66–67" wide and King beds about 81–82" wide, and most are 83–87" deep. Allow about 30" of walkway on three sides, plus room for 24–28" nightstands.
2. 2. Pick a finish family.High gloss lacquers like Canova, Claire and Imperia bounce light around a smaller room. Wood grains like Favignana, Amy and Tivoli feel warmer. Stone and metallic looks like Jo and Corso Como add a boutique-hotel finish.
3. 3. Decide on lighting and storage.If you read in bed or want a night-light glow, choose a collection with a lit headboard. If closet space is tight, choose a storage base.
4. 4. Build the set.Start with the bed, then add nightstands, a dresser and mirror, a chest, and a wardrobe if the collection offers one. Every piece comes in the same finish, so the room is fully matched.
5. 5. Confirm lead time.Many core pieces are stocked in North America and ship in a few weeks. California King and special configurations are made to order in Italy and can take several months. We confirm availability before you order.
