Recliner guide · 2026

The best modern recliners of 2026: American Leather vs. Himolla vs. Conform.

Three makers, three ideas of comfort. An American gliding or zero-gravity chair, a compact German recliner with the leg rest built in, or a sculptural Scandinavian swivel with its own footstool. Here’s how they really compare.

How to use this guide

Choose the motion first. The look comes second.

The best modern recliners no longer look like recliners. All three makers we carry build slim, tailored chairs that sit happily in a living room, but they recline in very different ways, and that difference matters more than any photograph.

American Leather builds custom chairs in Dallas, from a gliding chair that follows your body to powered zero gravity. Himolla builds compact German recliners with the leg rest inside the chair. Conform builds Swedish swivel chairs with a sculpted wood shell and a separate footstool. Below, we compare mechanisms, fit, covers, power, lead times and price, using only each maker’s published information and our own listings.

Already narrowed it down? Our American Leather recliner guide compares Comfort Air, Echo and Solace in depth, and Himolla vs Stressless puts Himolla against its best-known European rival.

Quick picks

The short answer.

At a glance

American Leather vs. Himolla vs. Conform.

American Leather Himolla Conform
Made in Dallas, Texas, custom to order, by a company founded by engineers in 1990. Taufkirchen (Vils), Bavaria, Germany, where Himolla began industrial production in 1948. Holsbybrunn in Småland, Sweden, where Conform has made armchairs since 1978.
How it moves Comfort Air glides, rocks and swivels with your body; Comfort Echo adds a built-in footrest (push-back or power); Comfort Solace is powered zero gravity. An integrated leg rest and backrest that move together (manual, or one motor on Aura Power), or separately with two motors and zero-gravity positioning on Stratus and Pelican. Power Echo Power, Solace and Comfort Recliner power models, with in-arm controls, USB-C and an optional battery. Electric versions of Aura (one motor), Stratus and Pelican (two motors), with an external battery pack. The Conform chairs we feature are manual: no motor, no cord.
Swivel Comfort Air swivels; base options vary by collection. 360° swivel on every Himolla chair we carry. Swivel with return memory: the chair turns back to its starting position.

The makers

Dallas, Bavaria and Småland.

American Leather · USA

Engineered for custom, fast

Founded by engineers in 1990, American Leather builds in a 350,000-square-foot factory in Dallas, Texas. Its founders believed 12 weeks was too long to take an order from concept to completion, and customization is still the point: any piece can be made in fabric, leather or your own material.

Since April 2014, American Leather has exclusively used foam, leather, fabric, and Ultrasuede® that are free from fire retardants.

Himolla · Germany

Function-first comfort

Himolla began industrial upholstered-furniture production in 1948 in Taufkirchen, Bavaria, and today calls itself one of the largest upholstered-furniture factories in Europe. Its whole collection has carried the Blue Angel eco-label since 2011.

Euro Link LP has been Himolla’s exclusive North American importer since 2015. The Aura 8536 is AGR-certified by Germany’s “campaign for healthy backs.”

Conform · Sweden

Armchair specialists since 1978

Conform has made armchairs in Holsbybrunn, in Sweden’s Småland furniture district, since 1978, and says it is “perfectly happy with making armchairs and footstools.” Upholstery is still done by hand: it says manufacturing “will never be fully automated.”

Timeout, Globe and Relieve are designed by the Norwegian designer Jahn Aamodt, the source of Conform’s Norwegian-modern reputation.

Comfort mechanisms

Three different ways to lean back.

The mechanism decides how a recliner feels every evening. Here is how each maker’s system works, and what it asks of you.

American Leather

Pick the style, then pick the motion

American Leather’s Design Your Recline program lets the same chair, such as Cirrus, come with different mechanisms:

  • Comfort Air: a swivel base and a tension-based gliding motion with a deep recline that follows your every move. Pair it with the matching ottoman.
  • Comfort Echo: adds a leg rest, as a manual push-back or a button-operated power recliner.
  • Comfort Solace: Elevating your feet above your heart at its deepest position, this is American Leather’s premier powered zero-gravity recline.
  • Comfort Recliner: Gordon pairs an articulating headrest with a stainless-steel footrest that hides the linkage, in manual or power.

Gordon Comfort Recliner, fully reclined: the footrest mechanism tucks away when upright.

Himolla

The leg rest lives inside the chair

Every Himolla we carry has an integrated leg rest and swivels 360°. The differences are in how it moves:

  • Manual: on Aura, push back and the leg rest and backrest move together. No outlet needed.
  • One motor: Aura Power moves leg rest and back together at the touch of a button.
  • Two motors and zero gravity: Stratus and electric Pelican adjust leg rest and back separately, with zero-gravity positioning when used with a battery.
  • Hidden headrest: Aura’s headrest folds out of the back when you want it and disappears when you don’t.

Himolla’s wider European range works the same way. The Cumuly 7926, for example, comes as a manual chair, with a gas-spring backrest and a leg rest you move by gentle body pressure, or as an electric version with 2 motors. Himolla’s external battery pack, no. 0920, is available for many models, so a power chair doesn’t have to sit by an outlet.

Conform

A chair that follows your spine

Conform’s Syncro Backup gives an ergonomically correct rest in all positions, thanks to three cooperating parts: the lower back, the upper back and the headrest. You lean back and the chair follows, with a simple grip to change the back angle.

  • Swivel with return memory: the chair returns to its original position when you stand up.
  • A matching footstool continues the line of the chair, and can be moved or tucked away. Timeout is also offered with an attached footrest.
  • No motor: the Conform chairs we feature are fully manual, so placement is never limited by a cord.
American Leather moves with you. Himolla holds the position you choose. Conform follows the curve of your back.

Power vs manual

Do you want a motor?

Power recline lets you stop at any angle, adjust legs and back separately on two-motor chairs, and reach zero gravity without effort. Manual chairs are simpler, quieter and can go anywhere in the room.

  • Choose power if you change position often, want legs and back set separately, or want zero gravity.
  • Choose manual if the chair will sit away from outlets, or you’d rather have fewer parts.
  • Plan placement first: a power chair’s cord, or a battery that needs charging, decides where it can live.
  • Try both: a body-led glider like Comfort Air and a fixed-position recliner like Himolla feel very different after an hour.

Sizing and fit

Measure the chair you’ll actually use: reclined.

Fit is where these brands differ most. American Leather offers three sizes on Air, Echo and Solace; Himolla offers medium and large and two seat heights; Conform makes one size with a high-back and extra-high-seat option. Compare the measurements below with a chair you already find comfortable.

Wall clearance vs reclined depth

American Leather publishes wall clearance: how far the chair must sit from a wall to recline. Himolla and Gordon list fully reclined depth. Either way, add a walkway beyond the footrest.

Weight and seat height

Himolla says all its upholstered furniture is tested and approved for users up to 130 kg (about 286 lb). Our Timeout listing gives a typical maximum load of 265 lb. Conform seats sit lower, at 16.5″, so ask about the extra-high seat if you prefer to rise easily.

Measurements are from our product listings and makers’ spec sheets; they are approximate and vary with base and configuration.

Leather and fabric grades

How each maker grades its covers.

American Leather

Grades and protection levels

Fabrics are graded I, II, III and V, and leathers by letter grade, such as LTHR F and LTHR G. Leathers come in three protection levels: Light (full top-grain, full-aniline, softest), Medium and Heavy (pigmented, the most resistant to spills and fading). American Leather says its leather is chosen from the top 10% of hides.

Ultrasuede® is available on every piece, alongside Crypton® and Sunbrella® performance fabrics. Order swatches.

Himolla

Price-group numbers

Every Himolla cover carries a price-group number: on our Aura listing, fabrics run from 13 Nevada and leathers from 18 Longlife to 71 Torro. The higher the number, the more premium the cover.

Four stocking leathers ship fastest. Many cover fabrics and all LongLife leathers are part of Himolla’s triple five-year guarantee. Himolla swatches are $5 each.

Conform

Fabric, leather and sheepskin

We offer Conform in Fabric A, B and C, Fabric Selected 1, Leather Groups 20 to 60 and, on Timeout, sheepskin. Conform’s leather comes from 6 tanneries in Europe, mainly Italy, and meets the EU REACH regulation.

Semi-aniline leather is less cold in winter, less sticky in summer and more resistant to stains and scratches than pure aniline, which develops the richest patina but needs the most care.

The rule is the same in all three: the more natural the leather, the softer it feels and the more care it asks. For a sunny coastal room, pets or children, choose a protected or pigmented leather, or a performance fabric.

Modern recliner questions

Frequently asked

What is the best modern recliner brand?

There isn’t one winner. American Leather suits people who want a chair that moves with them (Comfort Air) or powered zero gravity (Comfort Solace) in three sizes. Himolla suits people who want a compact chair with the leg rest built in, manual or power, and the fastest delivery on stocking leathers. Conform suits people who want a sculptural Scandinavian swivel with a separate footstool and no motor at all.

Which of these recliners has zero gravity?

American Leather Comfort Solace is a powered zero-gravity recliner; American Leather says its deepest position raises your feet above your heart. Himolla’s electric two-motor Stratus and Pelican offer zero-gravity positioning when used with a battery. The Conform chairs we feature are manual.

Is Conform Norwegian or Swedish?

Conform is Swedish. It has made armchairs in Holsbybrunn, in the Småland region of Sweden, since 1978. Several of its best-known chairs, including Timeout, Globe and Relieve, are designed by the Norwegian designer Jahn Aamodt, which is why you’ll often see them described as Norwegian-style recliners.

Do these recliners need a separate ottoman?

It depends on the mechanism. American Leather Comfort Air pairs with an optional matching ottoman, while Comfort Echo, Comfort Solace and the Comfort Recliner have a built-in footrest. Every Himolla recliner we carry has an integrated leg rest. Conform chairs are designed around a matching footstool, and Timeout can also be ordered with an attached footrest.

Which is best for a small room?

Look at width and recline space together. Himolla Aura is 28″ wide and about 60″ deep fully reclined. American Leather Comfort Air starts at 28″ wide in Standard size, with 14″ of wall clearance. Conform Timeout is 31.5″ wide; because its footstool is separate, you can tuck the stool away when you aren’t using it.

How long does delivery take?

Per our current listings: Himolla stocking leathers ship in about 7–10 business days, and custom covers are made in Germany and typically take several weeks. Conform is made to order in Sweden, typically 12–16 weeks, with select Quick Ship configurations. American Leather is made to order in Dallas, with quick-ship options on some models. We confirm timing before you order.

Can I see the leathers and fabrics first?

Yes. Order Himolla swatches or American Leather swatches online, or visit our Laguna Beach showroom. For Conform covers, contact us and we’ll help you compare.
