Copeland Furniture at Modern Studio · Made in Vermont since 1976
Copeland Furniture: solid hardwood, made to order in Vermont.
For almost fifty years, Copeland has built furniture from North American cherry, walnut, maple, oak and ash in Bradford, Vermont. Here’s the story, the woods and finishes, the new upholstery, and how to choose from its collections.
Bradford, Vermont
From a one-man shop to the town’s largest employer.
Tim Copeland started making wood products in 1976. In the company’s own words, it grew “from a one man shop to the largest employer in our small town of Bradford, Vermont.” It is still family owned and operated, and every piece is designed and built at its factory on the banks of the Connecticut River.
The look comes from that setting: the proportions of Vermont village architecture, Shaker and Arts & Crafts traditions, and clean Scandinavian lines. Collections range from the Shaker-rooted Sarah to the mid-century Estelle Lounge Chair and the modular Moduluxe bedroom.
Construction is traditional. Copeland uses time-tested joinery, sands and assembles by hand, and builds each piece to order. Most pieces ship in about 8 to 14 weeks, depending on the item and finish.

Select hardwoods
Cherry, walnut, maple, oak and ash.

Copeland buys its lumber from the American Northern Forest, much of it from within 500 miles of the factory. Cherry has a fine, even grain and darkens to a warm reddish brown in sunlight. American black walnut runs from grey-brown to deep chocolate and deepens with age. Maple is hard, tight-grained and pale.
Every piece gets a catalyzed finish that is GREENGUARD Certified for low chemical emissions as standard. It is made to resist stains, water rings, heat and abrasion.

How to choose
Three decisions that shape the piece.
1. Species and finish. Natural cherry starts light and mellows over time. The four cherry stains (Autumn, Cognac, Saddle and Smoke) give you that depth from day one. Natural walnut is the darkest and most dramatic. Keep one wood family running through a room and use finish to set the mood.
2. Scale. Solid wood moves with the seasons. Copeland notes that a 42-inch-wide table can change by about 3/8 of an inch over a year as humidity varies. Measure for the room, then check the dimensions tab on each product.
3. Upholstery. Choose microsuede for an easy-care everyday seat, Grade B fabric for color and texture, or ask us about leather and performance options for dining chairs that see heavy use.

Green furniture
Built to last generations.
Copeland’s view is that heirloom-quality furniture is the greenest kind, because it doesn’t have to be replaced. The factory heats its building with wood waste from manufacturing, recycles its packaging waste, and makes boxes to size on site to cut material use.
The company has been recognized by the Sustainable Furnishings Council (Silver Exemplary membership) and received the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s Sage Award for environmental excellence.
