Hanging Chairs Guide: Ceiling vs. Stand, Weight Capacity & Styles
The short answer: Before choosing a hanging chair, decide where it will hang: from a ceiling joist or beam, from a strong tree branch outdoors, or from a stand if it can't be fixed overhead. Then check the chair's weight capacity, its footprint and swing space, and whether it's rated for indoor, covered-patio or fully outdoor use. Many of our Studio Stirling chairs list a 120 kg (265 lb) capacity.

How do you hang a chair from the ceiling?
Hang a chair from a structural ceiling joist or beam, never from drywall or a ceiling finish. Many of our Studio Stirling chairs come with hanging hardware in standard lengths. That hardware only works if the structure above can carry the chair plus the person in it. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and have a qualified installer confirm the joist or beam and the fixing method before you hang anything.

Ceiling, beam, tree or stand: which is best?
- Ceiling joist or beam: the cleanest look indoors. It needs a confirmed structural fixing point.
- Exposed beam or pergola: common on covered patios. Check that the structure is rated for a moving load.
- Tree branch: the Nest Egg and Lucky Bean listings mention hanging from a tree branch. Choose a healthy, strong limb and check it regularly.
- Stand: useful for renters or where you can't fix anything overhead. Ask us whether a compatible stand is available for the chair you like.

How much weight can a hanging chair hold?
Check each product's listed capacity. The Bubble, Nest Egg, Lucky Bean, Single Recliner and Angle Seven (Sling Angular) listings each state a maximum of 120 kg (265 lb), and so does the Sling Butterfly Hanging Swing Chair. If a listing doesn't state a capacity, ask us before you order. The ceiling, beam or stand also has to be rated for that load.

Can hanging chairs be used outdoors?
Some can, but not all. The SLING Outdoor Chair uses weather-resistant fabric, and the Angle7 outdoor swing chair is made of powder-coated steel. The leather SLING chairs are listed for indoor or covered-patio use. Check each listing, and follow the care instructions for exposed or coastal locations.

How much space does a hanging chair need?
Start with the chair's own footprint. That's about 47″ across for the Bubble, Nest Egg and Lucky Bean, and about 34″ for the SLING chairs. Then add room for the chair to swing, for getting in and out, and for nearby walls, doors and walkways. Allow the hanging height and the clearances the manufacturer specifies.

Which hanging chair style suits my room?
- Enclosed and cocooning: the Bubble, Nest Egg and Lucky Bean have cushioned seats in a sculptural shell.
- Minimal and open: the SLING and SLING Butterfly chairs suspend leather or fabric in a slim frame.
- Architectural: the Angle Seven (Sling Angular) has a geometric steel frame and is also offered as a seat or as a chair with legs.

Questions, answered
Frequently asked
Do hanging chairs come with hanging hardware?
Many Studio Stirling listings say the hanging mechanisms come in standard lengths. Confirm what's included for your chair, and make sure it suits your ceiling height.
Can I hang a chair from a drywall ceiling?
Not from the drywall itself. The chair must be fixed into a structural joist or beam rated for the load. Have a qualified installer confirm it.
Is a hanging chair safe for adults?
Choose a chair whose listed capacity suits the user (several of ours list 265 lb), and make sure the support structure is rated for it too.
Can I use a stand instead of a ceiling mount?
A stand is a good option where you can't fix anything overhead. Ask us whether a compatible stand is available for your chair.
