A modern bed is the visual anchor of the bedroom, but good looks are only the beginning. Size, mattress support, frame height, headboard proportions, materials, and delivery access all affect how well the bed works in everyday life. This guide covers the decisions to make before ordering.
1. Choose the mattress size first
Start with the mattress you own or plan to purchase. Queen, king, and California king mattresses have different footprints, and the bed’s outside dimensions will be larger than the mattress. Always use the product’s overall width and length when planning the room.

2. Measure the complete bed—not only the mattress

3. Understand mattress support

4. Consider the finished sleep height
The final height is determined by the platform, mattress, and any required foundation. Compare the finished mattress height with the headboard so the mattress does not hide too much of its design.
5. Select the right headboard

Measure the wall height and note windows, artwork, sconces, outlets, and switches before selecting an extended or tall headboard.
6. Plan around nightstands and storage

If the bed has wide rails, a floating frame, or an extended headboard, confirm that your nightstands fit comfortably. For storage beds, check the clearance needed to open drawers or lift the platform.
7. Choose materials for the way you live
Solid wood offers natural variation and long-term character. Veneers can provide consistent grain and refined contemporary finishes. Upholstery introduces color and texture but should be selected with cleaning and sunlight in mind. Request finish or fabric samples whenever possible because screens cannot reproduce every color and texture accurately.
8. Think about lighting and power
Some modern beds offer integrated headboard or under-bed lighting. Confirm whether lighting is included or optional, how it is controlled, and where power is required. Plan outlet locations before installation, especially for floating beds, integrated nightstands, or independently controlled lighting zones.
9. Verify delivery access
Measure entry doors, hallways, stairs, elevators, and tight turns. Review the largest component dimensions, not only the assembled bed. Ask whether delivery includes assembly and whether packaging removal is available. Clear the room and delivery path before the scheduled arrival.
