Chapter one

The story

American Leather began in 1990 when its engineer-founders challenged a furniture-industry assumption: custom upholstery did not have to take months. From a borrowed facility and a small team, the company built a made-to-order system around precision, speed, and consistent craftsmanship.

Today, each piece is handcrafted in Dallas, Texas, in a 350,000-square-foot facility. Digital modeling and precision cutting support the skilled upholstery work behind clean tailoring, dependable comfort, and the unusually broad choice of covers, configurations, arms, legs, and finishes.

That engineering mindset is most visible in the Comfort Sleeper®, which replaced the familiar bars-and-springs compromise with a true sleep surface, as well as the brand’s motion seating and Comfort Air collections. The result is furniture designed not only to look composed, but to solve how a room actually needs to work.

For Modern Studio clients, American Leather is especially useful when a project needs a specific footprint, performance level, upholstery, or dual-purpose solution without sacrificing modern design.

What sets it apart

Craft and materials

American Leather combines computer-aided design and precision manufacturing with hands-on upholstery in its Dallas facility. Frames are engineered to reduce material waste, while leather patterns are mapped for consistency and efficient use of each hide.

The assortment spans premium leathers, fabrics, Ultrasuede®, performance textiles, and extensive finish choices. The company says its frames use wood from sustainable forests, remaining wood and leather scraps are recycled or reused, and its foam, leather, fabric, and Ultrasuede® have been free of added fire retardants since 2014.

The Modern Studio point of view

Why we carry it

We carry American Leather because its range answers real design problems: a guest-ready sleeper that still reads as a refined sofa, motion seating with a clean silhouette, and made-to-order upholstery that can be tailored to the room.

Our Laguna Beach team can help compare sleeper systems, frame sizes, seat comfort, leather protection levels, performance fabrics, and color in person. We recommend viewing physical swatches before ordering because screens cannot reliably show texture, sheen, or the way a color behaves in your light.
