Chapter one

The story

Copeland Furniture began in 1976 as a one-person woodworking operation in Vermont. Its first success was not a dining table or bed, but a wooden cider press made for homes and small orchards. From there came butcher-block kitchen pieces and Adirondack-style furniture—practical objects that taught the company how honest materials and useful design can earn a lasting place in everyday life.

The business grew from a small garage in East Corinth into a family-owned manufacturer on the Connecticut River in Bradford, Vermont. That setting still matters. New England villages, local architecture, farmland, and the surrounding northern forest all inform Copeland’s sense of proportion and its respect for wood as a renewable natural material.

Copeland’s look sits comfortably between contemporary and traditional. You can see the restraint of Shaker furniture, the clarity of Scandinavian design, and the integrity of Arts & Crafts construction, translated into clean modern beds, dressers, dining tables, seating, desks, and storage.

The result is furniture that does not chase a short-lived trend. It lets solid hardwood, balanced proportions, and careful joinery carry the design—qualities that make a piece easier to live with now and more meaningful over time.

Craft and materials

Copeland combines advanced computer-controlled manufacturing with traditional craft in Bradford, Vermont. The company says it exclusively sources North American-grown and harvested solid hardwoods, using imported hardware, glass, or textiles only where necessary.

Cherry, walnut, oak, maple, and ash each bring a different grain, color, and character. Hand-applied finish tones can shift the mood from pale and quiet to warm, smoky, or architectural, while natural variation ensures that no two pieces are exactly alike. Copeland also works with forest-protection and sustainability organizations as part of its approach to responsible sourcing.
