What is an American Leather Comfort Sleeper?

A Comfort Sleeper is American Leather's top sleeper sofa line. According to American Leather, every Comfort Sleeper:

  • uses the patented Tiffany 24/7™ platform sleep system, with no bars and no springs under the mattress
  • has an 80-inch-long sleeping surface; American Leather puts the average sleeper sofa at around 70 to 75 inches
  • needs zero wall clearance and has a frame that can be taken apart to fit narrow hallways and doorways
  • has a limited lifetime warranty on the frame and a 10-year warranty on the mechanism

American Leather currently lists 16 Comfort Sleeper styles, including Alora, Bentley, Gaines, Harris, Naomi, Sulley and Tavin. Every style can be upholstered in any of the brand's fabric and leather options.

What sizes does the Comfort Sleeper come in?

Every Comfort Sleeper comes in six sleep sizes: Cot, Twin, Full, Queen, Queen Plus and King. The mattress is 80 inches long at every size; only the width changes. The sofa's outside width depends on its arm style, so a slim track arm adds less width than a roll arm. Here are the mattress and sofa sizes from our Gaines Comfort Sleeper listing:

Size Mattress (W x L) Gaines sofa width Bentley sofa width
Cot 30″ x 80″ 48″ 41″
Twin 39″ x 80″ 57″ 50″
Full 54″ x 80″ 72″ 65″
Queen 60″ x 80″ 78″ 71″
Queen Plus 66″ x 80″ 84″ 77″
King 76″ x 80″ 94″ 87″

Mattress sizes are from the Gaines listing. Sofa widths are from the Gaines and Bentley listings. All dimensions are approximate; check the spec sheet for the model you choose.

For depth, our Gaines listing gives 40″ closed and 86″ open, and our Naomi and Sulley listings also give 86″ open. Leave walking room beyond the open depth.

Which Comfort Sleeper mattress should I choose?

American Leather offers three mattresses for the Comfort Sleeper:

  • HiPerform (standard): a firmer, high-density foam mattress with Crypton® fabric ticking. The standard mattress is 5 inches thick on most models.
  • Cooling Gel: American Leather describes it as a softer, cooler feel with even support across pressure points.
  • Tempur-Pedic®: a memory foam mattress that contours to the body. American Leather lists it as available on Comfort Sleeper sofas.

Upgrade pricing depends on the sleeper size. If the sleeper will be used often, for example in a guest room or for regular visitors, the upgrades are worth comparing.

Comfort Sleeper vs. a standard sleeper sofa: what's the difference?

Many traditional pull-out sleepers use a bar-and-spring mechanism with a mattress around 70 to 75 inches long, according to American Leather. The Comfort Sleeper replaces that with a solid platform, adds length (80 inches), and needs zero wall clearance. Within American Leather's own range, the same styles often come in three versions at different prices. For example, the Gaines is $3,999 as a Comfort Sleeper, $3,599 as a Silver Sleeper and $2,699 as a Today Sleeper. On the Today Sleeper, the seat cushion forms part of the mattress. Our sleeper system comparison covers how the three differ.

How do I choose the right Comfort Sleeper?

  1. Start with the mattress size your guests need, then check the sofa width for that size in the model you like.
  2. Measure the open depth (about 86″ on the models above) plus walking room.
  3. Check the delivery route. The frame comes apart, but measure doorways, stairs and turns anyway.
  4. Choose a mattress based on how often the bed will be used.
  5. Choose the cover. Every Comfort Sleeper comes in all American Leather fabrics and leathers, so ask us for samples.
