BDI Plume 8079 media console in natural walnut in a sunlit living room with a lounge chair and turntable

Brand guide · BDI · Modern Studio, Laguna Beach

BDI furniture, explained: media consoles, lift desks and a home office that hides the wires.

BDI has spent four decades designing furniture around the technology we live with. Here is how to choose a BDI media cabinet for your TV, which lift desk fits how you work, and the new LINQ, Plume, Cora and Terrace pieces now at Modern Studio.

The brand

Furniture designed around the technology inside it.

In 1984, industrial designer Bill Becker founded BDI. The company credits itself with several industry firsts, including pioneering TV stands with integrated wheels and the first cabinetry intended for flat panel TVs (BDI).

That engineering-first habit is still the reason to buy BDI. In the company’s words, adjustable shelves, acoustically transparent doors, fingerprint-proof glass and clever cord management “aren’t luxuries—they are standard.” Most of the pieces in this guide were designed by Matthew Weatherly, so a Corridor desk, a Cora table and a LINQ console share the same proportions and wood tones.

For the story of the brand, see our earlier introduction to BDI furniture. This guide is the practical companion: how to choose.

How to choose a media cabinet

Start with the TV, then the doors, then the airflow.

  • 1 · WidthChoose a console wider than the screen so the TV doesn’t overhang. BDI lists a recommended TV size for each cabinet; use it as your ceiling, not your target.
  • 2 · DoorsClosed doors only work if remotes and sound get through. Plume’s convex doors are wrapped in speaker grille cloth; LINQ’s grey glass supports IR, Bluetooth and wireless signals.
  • 3 · AirflowReceivers and consoles need to breathe. Look for flow-through ventilation, vented backs and shelves that don’t seal the compartment.
  • 4 · Cable accessRemovable rear panels (Plume) and hidden wheels (Corridor) make adding a new device a quick job.
TV Screen width BDI consoles that fit
65″ TV about 56.7″ LINQ 7583 Low Media Console · 65″ wide, rated up to 70″
Plume 8077 Media Console · 62″ wide, rated up to 70″
Profile 8477 Media Console · 61.75″ wide, rated up to 65″
75″ TV about 65.4″ CORRIDOR 8177 MEDIA CABINET · 65″ wide, rated up to 75″
85″ TV about 74.1″ Plume 8079 Media Console · 80″ wide, rated up to 85″
Elements 8703-CS Media Cabinet · 82.5″ wide, rated up to 85″

Screen widths are calculated for a standard 16:9 TV, not including the bezel or stand. Console widths and recommended TV sizes are BDI’s figures from our product pages.

BDI also notes that in fully enclosed cabinets, devices that rely on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, rather than line-of-sight IR signals, often work especially well, and that for components that do require IR control, an IR repeater may be used. For viewing height and delivery planning, our general media console buying guide goes deeper.

Media consoles

Six BDI media cabinets, from low and compact to an 85″ wall.

The new Plume is the one to see in person: the rounded walnut shell and bronze base read as furniture first. The LINQ 7583 sits lower, at 22″, for a wall-mounted TV or a room where you want the console to disappear.

Lift desks

Sit, stand and keep the cables out of sight.

Check three things on a lift desk. Range: the Luma 6763 travels from 27″ to 44.5″, and the Sequel 20 6152 from 24.75″ to 49.75″, a wider range for very tall or very short users. Presets: Luma’s digital controller includes two memory presets, and Sequel’s keypad stores four height memory presets. Depth: the 34″-deep Luma 6763 gives a monitor arm and a laptop room side by side.

A moving desk also moves its cables. Luma’s 6767 adjustable back panel is 57″ wide, fits 66″ Luma desks and adds a wire management track, privacy and a modesty screen.

Living room tables

Tables that hide the remotes and charge the phones.

BDI treats occasional tables as storage. The new Cora coffee table has two lined, full-depth drawers, and the Cora end table adds a rear power compartment for a charging strip. Terrace is lighter: tempered glass over open shelves, with a 13.25″-deep console that fits behind most sofas.

Both families pair with the media cabinets above. BDI photographs Cora with the Corridor 8179 home theater cabinet.

Which BDI media cabinet fits an 85-inch TV?

The Plume 8079 (80″ wide) and the Elements 8703-CS (82.5″ wide) are both rated for TVs up to 85″.
