Tom Dixon Pose Portable Lights on a wooden desk beside a window
Tom Dixon Melt Small Portable Light glowing on a walnut sideboard

A cordless lamp is the easiest way to give real design. It goes on a dinner table tonight, a nightstand tomorrow and a bookshelf next week.

Tom Dixon’s portable lights (from $193) recharge and look sculptural whether they’re on or off. The Bell is a minimalist high-gloss dome that Tom Dixon says was inspired by vintage car bumpers, with a concealed diffuser and a three-step touch dimmer. The Pose pivots and rotates, focuses its light into a magnified beam and switches between 2700K and 3000K. The Melt Small turns from a mirror into what looks like molten, hot-blown glass when it’s lit. For a terrace, the Jack Large is IP65 rated, stacks, and dims by remote. One remote runs up to three lights.

Tom Dixon quotes about 6–9 hours per charge for Bell and Pose, up to 8 for Jack and up to 10 for Melt Small.

Know someone with a QLOCKTWO EARTH 45? The EARTH 45 Stand lets it sit on a sideboard with no drilling. An extra front cover attaches with magnets and changes the finish or the language of the clock in seconds.

Gifts that change how a room feels, hour by hour.

QLOCKTWO MOON 90 with a gold moon on a deep blue face, seen through open double doors

When they already own the good sofa and the good speakers, give them something that moves. It could be time spelled out in words, the phases of the moon or a message spinning into place.

QLOCKTWO: time, written out

Designed by Biegert & Funk and handmade in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, a QLOCKTWO lights up the words of the time: “IT IS HALF PAST SEVEN.” The EARTH 13.5 is the bedside version, with an alarm and a Night Touch mode that keeps it dark until you tap it. The EARTH 45, formerly the CLASSIC, is the design icon, and its magnetic front can change later. The MOON 90 turns 14 prisms to show 28 phases of the moon. For the wrist there’s the QLOCKTWO W: a 38 mm word watch with no buttons. A natural turn of the wrist lights it, and it runs for up to ten days per charge.

Vestaboard: messages with motion

A Vestaboard isn’t a screen. It’s thousands of physical flaps that spin into each message you send from the free app. The Vestaboard Note (from $1,099) shows 45 characters from 2,880 flaps and sits on a shelf or hangs on a wall. The Red Dot Award-winning Vestaboard Black and White (from $3,499) show 132 characters from 8,448 flaps, and Vestaboard says they’re legible from over 50 feet.

Tom Dixon Tube High Table and Fat stools under mirrored Melt pendants

The best hosting gifts stay out after the party. They’re beautiful enough to leave on a console, and they invite people to sit down and play.

Impatia makes its game sets by hand in Italy, in a choice of 10 leather colors. The backgammon set pairs a leather box with aluminum and chrome checkers. The poker set comes in a handcrafted leather case. The chess and checkers set has chrome chess pieces. The Mossa Chess Set is Impatia’s first chess set: a smoked mirror glass board on a walnut or black lacquered oak base, with anodized aluminum and chrome pieces.

If the gift is the whole room, the Unootto Wood is Impatia’s octagonal poker table, designed by Enrico Azzimonti. It has a low-iron glass frame and an Alcantara® playing surface, for 8 or 10 players. For a home bar, Tom Dixon’s Tube High Table sets a white marble top on a tubular steel base, and the upholstered Fat Stool pulls up to it.

ClockClock 24 White on a sunlit plaster wall beneath an arch
Impatia Filotto Classic glass billiard table with red cloth in a living room

Kinetic art, crystal-glass game tables and fire you can gather around. These are the gifts a home is remembered for.

ClockClock 24

From the Stockholm studio Humans since 1982, ClockClock 24 (from $7,900) is a kinetic sculpture of 24 analog clocks. Their 48 hands swirl through patterns, then line up once a minute to show the time as digital numerals. It measures 90 × 40 cm. Each one is individually numbered, hand-assembled in Stockholm and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The Black with Golden Hands edition is the most dramatic.

Impatia game tables

The Filotto Classic is a professional billiard table in low-iron crystal glass, built on a three-piece Italian slate bed with Simonis cloth. The Lungolinea Wood is an Olympic-size ping pong table: a glass top on a solid wood base, with four rackets included. The Scivolo Wood brings shuffleboard into the living room in 9 ft or 12 ft. For a one-of-a-kind table, the Elie Saab × Impatia Plissé is cut from Brazilian Patagonia marble that Elie Saab hand-selects for each table (price on request).

Fire

AK47 Design’s Moon is a wood-burning fire pit that doubles as log storage and a low table. EcoSmart Fire’s Gin 90 Chat comes with an ethanol or gas burner, in concrete or teak. See all AK47 Design and EcoSmart Fire.

For a new home

Light the room they’ll live in every night.

Hammerton Studio Gem ring chandelier over a dining table

For new homeowners, a statement light is the gift that turns a house into theirs. Nobody buys it for themselves in the first year.

Hammerton Studio lighting is handcrafted in Salt Lake City in artisan glass and metalwork. The Gem Pendant (from $1,095) hangs a faceted handblown crystal shade from a slim integrated-LED fixture. It works over an island, a vanity or a bedside table. The Gem Ring brings the same glass to a dining room. Each piece of Mesa glass is drawn from up to five pounds of molten glass. Aalto and Rock Crystal recast the starburst in geometric and quartz-like glass, and Blossom shades are hand-blown so no two are quite alike.

From Tom Dixon, the Melt Pendant is a mirror when it’s off and glows like hot-blown glass when it’s on. The Beat Fat is brass hand-beaten by artisans in Northern India.

Gift the choice. Chandeliers come in many sizes, finishes and glass colors, so many people give the idea and then bring the new homeowner in to choose. We’re glad to help with sizing for their ceiling and table. Start with our Hammerton Studio introduction.

Holiday timing

Ask us about holiday delivery timing.

Many of these gifts are made to order. QLOCKTWO is handmade in Germany, Impatia in Italy, FYSIK in Bangkok and Hammerton Studio in Salt Lake City, so timing depends on the piece, the finish and the maker’s schedule. We don’t publish holiday cut-off dates. Ask us before you order and we’ll check current availability with the maker.

  • Large pieces: billiard, ping pong and shuffleboard tables need white-glove delivery, quoted for your location.
  • Options matter: finish, size and language choices can change timing, so tell us which version you want.
  • Want to see it first? Floor selection in Laguna Beach changes regularly. Call ahead if there’s a particular piece you’d like to see.

Gift guide questions

Frequently asked

What are the best luxury gifts for the home in 2026?

Look for design objects people use every day: a rechargeable Tom Dixon portable light, a QLOCKTWO word clock, a Vestaboard split-flap display, Impatia’s handcrafted Italian leather game sets, a ClockClock 24 kinetic clock, a hardwood WaterRower or a Hammerton Studio chandelier. Modern Studio carries all of them, with current prices in the quick-pick table above.

What is a good luxury gift under $500 for a design lover?

A Tom Dixon portable light is the strongest pick under $500. The Bell, Pose and Melt Small are cordless, rechargeable and sculptural, and they start from $193 at Modern Studio. For someone who already owns a QLOCKTWO EARTH 45, the EARTH 45 Stand or an extra magnetic front cover is a thoughtful upgrade.

What do you buy a design lover who has everything?

Something kinetic. A QLOCKTWO spells out the time in illuminated words, the MOON 90 shows the phases of the moon, and the QLOCKTWO W puts the word matrix on the wrist. A Vestaboard brings messages to life on physical split-flaps. All of them are design objects even when they’re standing still.

What are good luxury gifts for new homeowners?

Statement lighting. A Hammerton Studio Gem Pendant for the kitchen island, or a Gem, Mesa or Aalto chandelier for the dining room, is handcrafted in Salt Lake City and gets used every night. Tom Dixon’s Melt and Beat pendants are other favorites. Many people give the choice and bring the new owner to the showroom to pick the finish.

What are the best luxury gifts for someone who loves to host?

Impatia’s handcrafted leather backgammon, poker and chess sets, or the glass-and-mirror Mossa Chess Set, are made in Italy and stay out on display. For a full game room, look at Impatia’s Unootto poker table, Lungolinea ping pong table, Scivolo shuffleboard or Filotto billiard table. For a home bar, consider Tom Dixon’s Tube High Table and Fat Stool.

Is a QLOCKTWO EARTH 45 a good gift?

Yes. The EARTH 45, formerly the QLOCKTWO CLASSIC, is a 45 cm word clock handmade in Germany. Its magnetic front cover can be swapped later to change the finish or the language, and the optional EARTH 45 Stand lets it sit on a sideboard or desk instead of the wall.

Will my gift arrive before Christmas?

It depends on the piece. Many of these gifts are made to order, and timing varies by maker, finish and size, so we don’t publish holiday cut-off dates. Contact us or call (949) 376-0103 before you order, and we’ll confirm current timing with the maker.

Can I see these gifts in person?

Yes. Visit Modern Studio at 290 Broadway St in Laguna Beach, California. We’re open Monday through Saturday, with Sundays by appointment. Floor selection changes regularly, so call ahead if you want to see a specific piece.
