Brown is the new neutral: chocolate & cognac leather sofas.

Gray had its decade. Designers now reach for chocolate, cognac and caramel, and brown leather is the most lasting way to do it. Here’s how to choose the shade, the sofa and what to pair it with, with leathers you can order as swatches.

Why brown, why now

Warm neutrals replace cool gray.

In 1stDibs’ ninth annual designer survey, taken by 468 design professionals, chocolate brown was again the top color designers expected to use in 2026, chosen by 33% of respondents, up from 17% in 2022.

Retail forecasters agree. Trendalytics names terracotta, moss green and chocolate brown as the new core neutrals, and Ideal Home calls brown sofas the biggest sofa color trend of 2026, noting that cool grays now look dated.

A brown leather sofa also fits the 2027 colors of the year. Behr’s Grounded, for one, is an olive green with subtle brown undertones.

Choosing the shade

Chocolate, cognac or caramel?

  • Chocolate & espressoDeep and quiet. It anchors a large room, hides wear and suits cream walls, bouclé and brass.
  • Cognac & whiskeyWarm, reddish mid-browns. The most classic leather-sofa color, it brightens a room with blue, green or white walls.
  • Caramel & butterscotchLighter and sunnier. It suits coastal rooms with white oak, linen and plenty of daylight.
  • Saddle & tanBetween cognac and caramel. Easy with walnut, rattan and natural textures.

Leather color shifts with light. Look at swatches in your room by day and by lamplight before you order.

What to pair

Walnut, cream, green and a little shine.

Wood. Walnut deepens chocolate leather; white oak lightens cognac. Glass or a chrome base keeps a big leather sofa from feeling heavy.

Textiles. Cream bouclé, oatmeal linen and wool rugs soften leather.

Color. Olive, sage and moss (this year’s color-of-the-year greens), deep blue and rust all work with brown.

Metal. Brass and bronze warm it up; polished chrome gives it a 1970s edge.

Brown leather questions

Frequently asked

Is a brown sofa going to look dated?

Ideal Home asks the same question, since gray sofas went from on-trend to dated. A brown leather sofa in a simple shape is a safer bet than a trendy silhouette, and leather can be refreshed with new cushions, throws and rugs as tastes change.

What’s the difference between chocolate and cognac?

Chocolate and espresso are deep, cool-leaning browns. Cognac and whiskey are warmer, reddish mid-browns. Caramel and butterscotch are lighter still.

What colors go with a brown leather sofa?

Cream, oatmeal and white for a calm room; olive, sage and moss for an earthy one; deep blue or rust for contrast. Walnut and brass finish it.

Can I order an American Leather sofa in brown leather?

Yes. Pieces such as the Barcelona and Copenhagen are listed as available in American Leather fabrics and leathers. Order swatches first, then contact us to price your leather grade.
