Entryway and stairwell chandeliers: how big, how tall and how low.
Formulas for chandelier diameter, fixture height and clearance in single-height entries, two-story foyers and stairwells, with charts and the Hammerton Studio, ET2 and Studio M fixtures built for vertical space.
First impressions
The fixture everyone sees first.
An entry chandelier is seen from more angles than any other light in the house: from the front door, from the stairs, from the landing above and from outside through the windows at night. A dining chandelier is sized to a table. An entry or stairwell fixture is sized to the volume of space around it, and hung to clear the people walking underneath.
That makes three numbers matter: diameter (from the floor area), fixture height (from the ceiling height) and clearance (from the floor, the door and the stair treads). The formulas below handle all three, and the charts turn them into sizes you can shop in our modern chandeliers, Hammerton Studio chandeliers and ET2 collections.

The formulas
Diameter, height and clearance.
Worked example. An 11 × 13 ft two-story foyer with an 18 ft (216″) ceiling. Diameter: 11 + 13 = 24″ as a base, about 30–36″ for double height. Fixture height: 45–54″. If the fixture is 48″ tall and its bottom hangs about 8–9 ft above the floor, the overall height (ceiling to bottom of fixture) is 216 − 102 = 114″. The ET2 Bobble 24-Light (31.5″ × 48.25″, OAH 51.75″–193.75″) fits.
Sizing charts
Entry size and ceiling height, at a glance.
| Entry floor area | Base diameter | Two-story diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 6 × 6 ft | 12″ | 15–18″ |
| 8 × 8 ft | 16″ | 20–24″ |
| 10 × 10 ft | 20″ | 25–30″ |
| 12 × 12 ft | 24″ | 30–36″ |
| 14 × 14 ft | 28″ | 35–42″ |
| 16 × 16 ft | 32″ | 40–48″ |
Base = length + width in feet, read as inches. Two-story = 1.25–1.5× the base.
| Ceiling height | Fixture height | Fixture type |
|---|---|---|
| 8 ft | ≈ 20–24″ max | Flush or semi-flush |
| 9 ft | 22–27″ | Compact pendant or ring |
| 10 ft | 25–30″ | Chandelier or cluster |
| 12 ft | 30–36″ | Chandelier or starburst |
| 16–18 ft | 40–54″ | Vertical, tiered or large |
| 20 ft+ | 50–60″+ | Tall vertical or multi-tier |
At 2.5–3″ per foot of ceiling. Check walkway clearance first.
Two-story foyers
Fill the volume, not just the ceiling.
Hang it where it reads from both floors. In a two-story foyer, the bottom of the fixture usually sits around the second-floor level or a little below, so it is seen from the landing and from the door. If there is a window above the door, center the fixture in it so it shows from the street at night.
Pick a vertical or tiered shape. Tall forms fill the vertical space that a wide, flat ring leaves empty. The ET2 Unity Vertical is 63″ tall with an OAH up to 183″, and the ET2 Moonscapes 5-Light is 55.75″ tall with an OAH up to 175.5″.
Check the OAH maximum, not just the minimum. Some statement chandeliers have short suspensions. The Hammerton Rock Crystal Starburst tops out at 76.9″ (Medium) or 81.4″ (Large), so it suits a 10–12 ft ceiling better than an 18 ft foyer. The Parallel Two-Tier Ring goes to about 125″.

Stairwells
Light the run, clear the treads.

Measure to the tread directly below. The 7 ft clearance is from the lowest point of the fixture to the stair tread underneath it. Because stairs climb, the same fixture can be 9 ft above the bottom step and only 6 ft above a higher one. Mark the spot on the stairs before choosing the drop.
Use length, not width. A long, narrow stair hall suits a vertical pendant or a cascade more than a wide chandelier that crowds the railing. The ET2 Serpentine 60″ Vertical is 21.25″ across and 59″ tall; the Studio M Trance 3-Light is just 10″ across and 39.25″ tall with an OAH up to 160″.
Think about the view from above. On a landing you look down onto the fixture. Glass clusters and sculptural LED look good from every angle; drum shades show their tops. Hammerton describes its Gem Cluster Pendant as able to fill a stairwell or double-height entry.
Single-height entries
Under an 8–9 ft ceiling, go flush or semi-flush.
Doors swing, coats come off and people walk right underneath. With an 8 ft ceiling, a hanging fixture leaves very little room above 7 ft clearance, so a flush or semi-flush mount is usually the right call.

Entry and stairwell questions
Frequently asked
What size chandelier do I need for my entryway?
Add the entry’s length and width in feet and use the total as the diameter in inches. A 10 by 12-foot entry suggests about 22 inches. In a two-story foyer, go 1.25 to 1.5 times larger, because the fixture is seen from farther away.
How high should an entryway chandelier hang?
Keep the lowest point at least 7 feet above the floor in a single-story entry, with extra room if a door swings beneath it. In a two-story foyer, the bottom usually sits around the second-floor level, or centered in a window above the door.
How tall should a foyer chandelier be?
About 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height for every foot of ceiling height: roughly 25 to 30 inches tall for a 10-foot ceiling and 45 to 54 inches for an 18-foot foyer.
How low can a stairwell chandelier hang?
Keep at least 7 feet between the lowest point of the fixture and the stair tread directly below it. Check this at every step the fixture passes over, not only at the landing.
What kind of light works in a long stairwell?
Vertical pendants and cascades, such as the ET2 Serpentine 60-inch Vertical, Unity Vertical or Moonscapes, fill height without crowding the railing. Check that the fixture’s maximum overall height reaches the drop you need.
What if my entry has an 8-foot ceiling?
Use a flush or semi-flush mount, such as the ET2 Souffle 18-inch or the Hammerton Downtown Mesh semi-flush drum, so the fixture stays clear of heads and the door.
