Modern dining room lighting ideas that actually fit the table.
Eight ways to light a modern dining room, from hand-blown glass rings to low-profile concrete and sculptural LED, with the real sizes, prices and specs of the fixtures that make each idea work.
Before you choose
Pick the idea, then let the table set the size.
Every idea below starts from the same place: the table. A round table wants a round fixture; a long rectangle wants a linear or a sequence of lights. Size comes from the tabletop (roughly the table width minus 12″ for a round fixture, and about two-thirds of the table length for a linear), and height from the ceiling (30–36″ above the table at 8 ft, plus about 3″ per extra foot).
We cover the arithmetic in detail in how to size and hang a chandelier over your dining table and in our linear chandelier size guide. This guide is about the look: eight directions we see working in modern dining rooms, and the fixtures from Hammerton Studio, ET2 and Studio M that deliver them.
| Table | Fixture shape | Size to shop |
|---|---|---|
| 36–48″ round | Ring, cluster or drum | 18–36″ diameter |
| 54–60″ round | Ring or radial | 30–40″ diameter |
| 72″ rectangle | Linear or branch | ≈ 48″ long |
| 84–96″ rectangle | Linear or branch | 56–64″ long |
| 108″+ | Long linear or two fixtures | 72″+ or a pair |
Rules of thumb from our dining chandelier sizing guide. Confirm against your room and ceiling.
Idea 1 · Round tables
A glass ring over a round table.
A ring repeats the shape of a round table and keeps the center open, so you see across it. The Hammerton Studio Gem Ring Chandelier uses faceted shades of handblown crystal on integrated LED, in Small 27.4″, Medium 37.2″ and Large 49.3″ diameters, plus a Two-Tier version.
For a 48″ table, the Small; for a 54–60″ table, the Medium. Glass comes in Amber, Bronze, Clear or Smoke across 12 metal finishes. For softer, organic glass, the Gaia Radial Ring sets hand-blown, lead-free crystal orbs in a sunburst at 38.7″ or 51″.

Idea 2 · Long tables
One long line of light over a long table.
A linear gives even light from one end of a rectangular table to the other with a single junction box. Aim for about two-thirds of the table length and stop 6–12″ short of each end.
The Studio M Tropo 7-Light, designed by Stefanie Hering, pairs translucent porcelain shades with a separately switched downlight for the plates, at 66″ long. For striated hand-blown crystal, the Hammerton Mesa Linear comes in 44″, 58.9″ and 75.6″. The full chart is in our linear size guide.

Branches that reach along the table.
A branch chandelier spreads its arms along the length of a rectangular table but keeps the airy, organic feel of a classic chandelier. The Hammerton Studio Blossom Modern Branch carries hand-shaped blown-glass shades that unfurl like flowers, so no two are alike.
Sizes are given by width: 6 lights at 36.4″, 8 lights at 49.1″ and 10 lights at 64.2″. That makes the 8-light a good match for a 72–84″ table and the 10-light for 96″. Gem crystal also comes in a Modern Branch version.

Idea 4 · Hand-blown glass
A cluster of glass orbs.
Clusters gather many small glass forms into one rounded mass. They sit comfortably over round and square tables and look good from every seat. The Hammerton Studio Luna Cluster Bloom encloses LED-lit cast-crystal diffusers in softly undulant hand-blown orbs: 9 lights at 28″ or 12 lights at 29.8″, right for a 42–48″ round table.
For a smaller table or a breakfast nook, the Gem Cluster Pendant comes in 3 lights (15.6″) or 6 lights (23.4″). On the ET2 side, the Big Fizz 5-Light suspends large fonts of clear bubble glass from Polished Chrome, 13″ across and 26.5″ tall.

Keep it low-profile when the ceiling is 8 ft.
With an 8 ft ceiling and a 30″ table, a fixture hung 30–36″ above the table leaves only 30–36″ between the ceiling and the bottom of the light, and the fixture’s own height has to fit inside that. Shallow forms solve the problem.
The ET2 Souffle 33″ is only 3.25″ tall: scalloped pans of cast concrete that ET2 says were inspired by ramekins, in Chalk White, Gray or Terra Cotta. The ET2 Pebble 30-Light is 36″ across but only 4.75″ tall, with irregular crystal pebbles in Polished Gold clasps. The Hammerton Gem Ring is 7.1″ tall in its Small size.
Quick check: fixture height + clearance above the table + table height should not exceed your ceiling height. At 96″ ceiling − 30″ table − 33″ clearance, you have about 33″ for the fixture and its suspension.

Pebble 30-Light

Idea 6 · Crystal
Crystal, cut for a modern room.
Crystal does not have to mean a traditional chandelier. These designs use it as faceted forms, pebbles and stalactites instead of prisms.

Studio M · faceted crystal · 27″
Empire 6-Light LED Chandelier
$3,356.10

Light as a line drawing.
Integrated LED lets a fixture be little more than a line. ET2’s Scion family draws branch-like forms in Black or Weathered Brass. The Scion 27″ works over a small round table, and the Scion 53″ 3-Light, 54″ across, over a larger one.
For more drama, the ET2 Rinkle 3-Light Linear hangs sheets of hand-shaped acrylic that carry the light from LEDs hidden in stainless strips, 50.5″ long, in Brushed Gunmetal, French Gold or Polished Chrome.

View detailsFinish the room
Layer the light: one fixture is never enough.
Add a second layer
A chandelier lights the table. Wall sconces or a pair of picture lights handle the walls, and recessed or track lights cover the buffet. Browse wall light fixtures and flush mounts.
Dim everything
The same room serves homework and dinner parties. Hammerton lists TRIAC/ELV dimming on its glass families, and several Studio M fixtures list 3-in-1 Triac, ELV or 0-10V dimming. Many ET2 models in our catalog are listed as non-dimmable, so check each spec sheet.
Keep it warm
2700K–3000K flatters food and skin. Hammerton’s integrated LEDs come in 2700K or 3000K at 93+ CRI; most ET2 and Studio M fixtures in this guide are 3000K with CRI 90.
Size the table first

Dining lighting questions
Frequently asked
What is the best type of light for a dining room?
A single statement fixture centered over the table, such as a chandelier, ring or linear, on a dimmer, plus a second layer of wall or recessed light. Match the fixture shape to the table: round fixtures for round tables and linears or branches for rectangles.
How big should a dining room chandelier be?
For a round fixture, about the table width minus 12 inches at most. For a linear, about two-thirds of the table length. Our dining chandelier sizing guide has a full chart.
How high should a dining room light hang?
30 to 36 inches from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture with an 8-foot ceiling, plus about 3 inches for every additional foot of ceiling.
What dining light works with a low ceiling?
Choose a shallow fixture. The ET2 Souffle 33 inch is 3.25 inches tall and the ET2 Pebble 30-Light is 4.75 inches tall, so both leave room to hang at the right height under an 8-foot ceiling.
Should I use one chandelier or pendants over a dining table?
One fixture is simplest and most formal. A row of two or three pendants works over long tables; keep the outside pendants at least 12 inches in from the ends. Very long tables of 120 inches or more often look best with two matching fixtures.
What color temperature is best for dining?
Warm white, 2700K to 3000K, with a CRI of 90 or higher so food and skin look natural.
