Game tables are back: how to design a game room for mahjong, poker & chess.
Designers say game tables are the piece of the moment, and mahjong nights are a big reason. Here’s how to size a mahjong-ready table, choose for poker or chess, and light and seat the room, with Impatia, Arditi, Copeland, Tom Dixon and Hammerton.
The trend
The game table moves into the living room.
“Game tables are going to be everywhere in 2027,” designer Kathryn Hunt told House Beautiful, after a market season in which game tables turned up in almost every showroom (House Beautiful). Designers are styling them as accent pieces in living rooms, dens and foyers, ready to play instead of stored away.
Mahjong is driving much of it. One designer told House Beautiful the mahjong table has become one of the first programming requests when planning a living or great room (House Beautiful).

Mahjong-ready
A square table, 34–40″, at dining height.
Mahjong suppliers recommend a square top of 34–36″ for four players at standard dining height, about 29–30″ (Land of Mahjong). Racks overhang a smaller table, and a counter-height table is too tall to read the tiles across. Many hosts go up to 40″ to leave room for drinks and the card (USA Mahjong).
We don’t carry a dedicated mahjong table with tile drawers or an automatic shuffler. These are square tables in the size players recommend: the 39″ Impatia Tuttuno and the 36″ Arditi Ladon, both at dining height. Add a mahjong mat sized to your top, and you’re ready.

Seat it, light it, and leave the game out.
Chairs. House Beautiful’s designers stress comfortable chairs and making sure everyone can reach the play. Choose dining-height chairs for a 29–30″ table; arms help on a long night.

A second surface. Keep drinks off the playing field with a side table or console nearby.

Frequently asked
What size table do I need for mahjong?
A square top of 34–36″ at dining height (about 29–30″) is the common recommendation for four players. Go to 38–40″ if you want room for drinks. The Impatia Tuttuno is 39″ square and 29″ high; the Arditi Ladon four-seater is 36″ square and 29.5″ high.
Do you sell a mahjong table?
Not a dedicated one with tile drawers or racks built in. We recommend square tables in the size mahjong players use, like the Tuttuno and the Ladon, with a mahjong mat on top.
Can I use my dining table?
Yes, if it’s at least 34–36″ wide. Land of Mahjong notes that a standard 72 × 36″ dining table works, with the extra length for snacks or a drink station.
How long do Impatia tables take?
Impatia tables are made to order in Italy. Lead times on our product pages range from 4–6 weeks for the Derby foosball table to 10–12 weeks for the Tuttuno Dark and Unootto.
How are Impatia tables priced?
