Vestaboard at Modern Studio · Split-flap messaging displays
Vestaboard: the split-flap display that makes every message an arrival.
The flutter of a train-station departure board, reimagined for the kitchen, the studio and the hotel lobby. Vestaboard is a connected display of thousands of physical spinning flaps you control from your phone. Here’s how it works, how the full-size Flagship compares with the compact Vestaboard Note, and how to plan one for your space.
Not a screen
The best of analog and digital.
“It’s not a digital screen,” Vestaboard says of its own product. “It’s thousands of spinning flaps you control with your device from anywhere.” Type a message on your phone and, wherever the board hangs, every character spins into place with a sound that makes the whole room look up. Then it stops and stays there, quietly, like a piece of graphic art.
That is the appeal. In a home full of glowing rectangles, a Vestaboard asks for nothing: no feeds, no notifications. Its specially designed font is easy to read from a distance, its characters are visible from over 50 feet, and it is, in Vestaboard’s words, “beautiful when still.” The design won a Red Dot Award in 2021, and it comes from a team Vestaboard describes as having brought products like Nest and Roku to market.
At Modern Studio we carry the full-size Vestaboard in Black and White. You’ll find them in our Vestaboard collection.
“You must watch it in action. Seeing Vestaboard come alive and transform is kinetic and satisfying.” — Neil Patrick Harris, quoted by Vestaboard
How it works
132 Bits, 64 characters each, one app.
Every full-size Vestaboard is made of 132 modular character units that Vestaboard calls Bits. Each Bit holds 64 die-cut characters: letters, numbers, symbols and eight colors. That adds up to 8,448 flaps. Vestaboard says its patented Bit “has been tested to millions of cycles to land on the exact right character at the right time,” and a Bit can be replaced by hand if it ever needs to be.
- Send from anywhere. The free Vestaboard app for iPhone, Android and the web lets you send instantly or schedule, compose with the visual editor, pick from Today’s Picks and templates, and invite others to post.
- Quiet when you are. Set a time zone and quiet hours, and pin an important message.
- Automate with Vestaboard+. An optional subscription from Vestaboard adds hundreds of channels, from weather, sports scores and news to calendars, music and art. Core messaging stays free.
- Built to integrate. Read/Write, Subscription and Local APIs for developers and smart-home integrators.

Choose a format
Flagship or Note: the same experience, two scales.
Vestaboard makes two displays. The Flagship is a 132-character wall piece about the size of a 42-inch TV. The Vestaboard Note is a 45-character display that can sit on a shelf or hang on a wall. Both use the same app and the same split-flap mechanism, and both carry Vestaboard’s 2-year limited warranty.

Vestaboard Note
Set the tempo for the ones you love.
The Vestaboard Note is Vestaboard’s “inviting, playful, and versatile take on the flagship display”: 45 characters on three rows, made from 2,880 spinning flaps, and one of its 64 characters is a red heart. It works with or without a frame. Frameless, it is an edge-to-edge object for a shelf, countertop or built-in. Framed, it hangs on the wall with a finish that echoes the Flagship. It comes in Black or White.
Notes also scale up. Vestaboard’s Note Array arranges several Notes into one unified display “of any size or shape,” for a studio, a restaurant or a stadium. Ask us if you’re planning one.
Where it lives
At home, at work, and wherever guests gather.
Vestaboard describes itself as a focal point that “enhances any setting every day.” These are the places we see it work best, with ideas taken from Vestaboard’s own lists of what owners display.
Home
“Art, organization and inspiration in a single frame.” Hang it where the family crosses paths: the kitchen, the entry, a stair landing.
- Morning weather and the day’s plan
- Love notes and messages from the road
- Countdowns to birthdays and vacations
- “Now playing” from Spotify, quotes and color art
Office
“Inform and inspire the people that move your business.” A shared board in the studio or lobby becomes a scoreboard, a welcome and a conversation starter.
- Team shout-outs, milestones and birthdays
- Sales metrics and real-time dashboards
- Welcome messages for clients
- Slack and calendar integrations
Hospitality
“Engage, inform, and delight your customers.” In a café, bar or hotel lobby the flutter itself draws the eye before anyone reads a word.
- Daily specials, bar and wine menus
- Guest greetings by name
- Event and spa schedules
- Retail promotions and concierge notes

Planning
Plan the wall, the power and the Wi-Fi.
1. Choose the wall
The Flagship mounts with an included wall plate and bracket system, anchored to wood studs or concrete. Vestaboard recommends two people and says installation typically takes under 30 minutes. At 41.2 × 22 inches it reads like a 42-inch TV, so give it the same breathing room.
2. Plan the outlet
A standard 3-prong outlet should sit directly behind the display or just below it. Vestaboard ships a 19.7-inch cable for that; if the outlet is further away, there’s an official 8 ft fabric power cord in Black or White. A recessed outlet behind the board gives the cleanest look.
3. Connect
Vestaboard needs Wi-Fi with an Internet connection (2.4 or 5 GHz) and also has an Ethernet port. Setup runs through the Vestaboard app, and you only reconnect if your network changes.
4. In a public space?
The Frame Lock Kit adds two lock screws to the bottom of the frame that need a hex key to remove. For several boards, the app can manage them all, and Vestaboard+ can mirror one message across displays.
Good to know
- The Flagship can’t stand upright on a table without a rated VESA-compatible display system. The Note can, frameless.
- Power: 100–240 V. The Flagship uses 121 W while updating a message and very little when idle.
- Each Vestaboard+ subscription covers one display, and it’s optional.
- Lead time and delivery depend on Vestaboard’s production schedule. We confirm both before you order. Shipping policy

Frequently asked
What is a Vestaboard?
A connected split-flap messaging display. Instead of pixels it uses physical flaps that spin to show letters, numbers, symbols and colors, and you control it from the Vestaboard app on your phone or computer.
How big is a Vestaboard?
The Flagship is 41.2 inches wide, 22.0 inches tall and 3.5 inches deep with its mount, about the size of a 42-inch TV, and shows 132 characters. Vestaboard Note is 24.5 × 8.6 inches frameless or 28.4 × 12.2 inches framed and shows 45 characters.
Do I need a subscription?
No. The free app lets you send and schedule messages, use the visual editor and invite others. Vestaboard+ is an optional subscription from Vestaboard that adds automated channels and integrations.
How many characters can it show?
Up to 132 on the Flagship (6 rows × 22 columns) and up to 45 on the Note (3 rows × 15 columns). Vestaboard formats your message automatically, or you can lay it out yourself with the visual editor.
Black or White?
Both Flagship finishes are aluminum frames: Black is RAL 9011 Graphite Black and White is RAL 9003 Signal White. Black reads crisp and graphic on light or textured walls; White blends into bright, minimal rooms. See both side by side.
Is there a warranty?
Vestaboard includes a 2-year limited warranty starting on the date of delivery.
Can I see Vestaboard in person?
