Holiday hosting guide · 2026 · Modern Studio, Laguna Beach
The best extendable dining tables for holiday hosting.
Choose a table for the nights you eat as two to six, and let the extension handle the nights you host twelve. This guide covers how to size it, how each mechanism works, which tops hold up to a holiday dinner, and our picks by price, using real closed and extended dimensions.
The short answer
Our short list, if you only read one section.
An extendable table is the right call when your everyday table and your holiday guest list don’t match. It stays in proportion with the room most of the year and opens up when everyone comes home. Here is where we’d start, by situation. Prices are current as of publication.
- Need it soonNAOS Galax Oval QuickShip: 78¾″ to 110¼″, typically 2–4 weeks from New Jersey when in stock.
- Best valueModus Meadow: solid acacia, 63″ to 95″, $979.
- Round that growsConnubia Giove Plus: the ceramic top rotates from 55⅛″ to 80¾″.
- Heirloom hardwoodCopeland Butterfly: made in Vermont, with a self-storing 24″ leaf.
- Seats twelveCopeland Exeter at 112″, or Ethnicraft Double at 118″.
- The banquetNAOS Convivium: up to 157½″ fully open.

Sizing
Size for every day, then check the extended length.
Most designers allow about 24 inches of table edge per guest, and closer to 28 inches for armchairs or a more generous place setting. An end seat works when the table is at least 36″ wide and the base leaves room for knees. 40″ or more is easier when platters run down the middle.
Leave about 36 inches between the table edge and a wall or furniture so guests can pull out a chair, and 42–48 inches where people need to walk behind seated guests. Measure for the extended length, not just the closed one. That’s the size the room has to hold on Thanksgiving.
Round tables are the most sociable for four to six. Round-to-oval extensions such as the Copeland Audrey and Connubia Orion keep that feel and add seats when you need them.
No room for a dining table at all? Our guide to transforming coffee-to-dining tables covers Ozzio Italia tables that rise from coffee height to dining height, and console tables that open for dinner.

| Guests | Extended length to look for | Tables in this guide that reach it |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8 | About 72–84″ | Connubia Mikado (to 82¾″), Giove Plus (to 80¾″), Copeland Audrey (to 72″ or 78″) |
| 8–10 | About 94–102″ | Modus Carlisle (to 96″), Connubia Gate (to 94½″), Copeland Butterfly (to 96″), Modus Arden (to 102″) |
| 10–12 | About 108–118″ | Copeland Exeter (to 112″), NAOS Galax QuickShip (to 110¼″), Ozzio Axel (to 114″ or 118″), Ethnicraft Double (to 118″) |
| 12+ | 120″ and beyond | Connubia Bold (to 122⅛″), NAOS Convivium (to 157½″) |
Guest counts are general planning guidance. Where a maker publishes its own seating figure, such as Copeland’s “up to 12” for the two-leaf Exeter, we quote it on the card.
How they open
Five ways a table gets longer.
1. Self-storing butterfly leaf
The leaf folds and lives inside the table, so there’s nothing to carry from a closet. It’s Copeland’s signature, on the Butterfly, Sarah and Audrey, and Huppé’s Magnolia uses a 24″ wood butterfly leaf too.
2. Center leaves
The top splits and slides apart, and one or two leaves drop into the middle. The Modus Meadow uses two 16″ leaves to go from 63″ to 95″.
3. Rotating and synchronized tops
The top rotates, or both ends glide out together, and the leaves align in one motion. Connubia’s Giove Plus, Band and Gate work this way, and so do NAOS tables like the Turning.
4. Multi-stage extensions
Several leaves let you pick the right length for the evening. The Connubia Bold opens in three stages, from 82¾″ to 122⅛″.
5. Round to oval to round
Ozzio’s Big Round goes from a 51″ round to a 51″ × 65″ oval to a full 65″ round on a patented overlapping-joint mechanism.

Surfaces
Which top holds up to a holiday dinner?

Ceramic is the host’s surface. It resists heat, scratches and stains, and marble-look tops give you the veining without stone’s upkeep. Connubia offers ceramic on the Artic Fast, Gate and Giove Plus, and NAOS uses it on the Fusion QuickShip.
Glass keeps a big table visually light, which helps in an open-plan room. The NAOS Quasar has a glass top and glass legs.
Solid hardwood develops character over time and can be refinished. Copeland builds in solid North American cherry, walnut and oak in Vermont with GREENGUARD Certified finishes. Ethnicraft’s Bok is solid teak.
Wood-look melamine and veneer keep the price down and are easy to look after day to day. Connubia’s Mikado and Bold use melamine tops in oak looks.
Whatever the top, use trivets under very hot dishes on wood and veneer, and wipe up red wine promptly. Each product page lists the maker’s care instructions.
Holiday timing
Need it by Thanksgiving? Start with these.
Most tables in this guide are made to order: Italian lines usually take 10 to 16 weeks and Copeland 8 to 14. Ordering one now is a good plan for spring, but not for November. The tables below have a stocked or quick-ship option that the maker lists, so they’re the realistic choice for the holidays. Stock changes daily, so we confirm availability and delivery dates before you order.

Complete the table
Chairs, a sideboard and light over the table.
Chairs. Buy enough for everyday use and borrow the rest. A bench or two stackable side chairs can cover the holiday overflow. Our dining chairs include Connubia’s compact Italian seating and NAOS chairs in QuickShip configurations.
Serving. A sideboard near the table takes the platters off the table so you can seat more people. Browse buffets and sideboards.
Lighting. As a guide, hang the bottom of a fixture about 30–36″ above the top, and choose one about half to two-thirds the table’s closed length. A linear fixture suits long extendable tables. See Hammerton Studio linear chandeliers, ET2 linear lighting and our modern chandeliers. For sizing formulas and a chart, read how to size and hang a chandelier over your dining table.

Frequently asked
What size extendable table seats 10 or 12?
Allow about 24″ of edge per guest. For ten, look for roughly 94–102″ extended. For twelve, look for 108″ or more. The Copeland Exeter reaches 112″ with two leaves, which Copeland rates for up to 12, and the Ethnicraft Double reaches 118″.
Are extendable dining tables sturdy?
Well-made ones are. Look for metal runners or slides, leaves that store in the table, and a base that supports the extended top. Pedestal and double-pedestal bases, like the Modus Cannon, keep the ends clear for chairs. We’re happy to demonstrate mechanisms at the showroom.
Where do the leaves go when the table is closed?
On most tables in this guide the leaves store inside: Copeland’s butterfly leaves, the Mobican Bali’s 22″ leaf and many Connubia and NAOS mechanisms. Each product page lists what the maker specifies.
Can I get an extendable table before Thanksgiving?
Possibly, if you choose a stocked configuration. NAOS QuickShip tables typically ship in 2–4 weeks from New Jersey when in stock. Mobican lists a Quick Ship Bali, ALF ships in-stock items in about 2–3 weeks, and Connubia has QuickShip colorways. Made-to-order tables usually take 8–16 weeks. Contact us and we’ll confirm stock and delivery dates before you order.
Ceramic, glass or wood: which is best for entertaining?
Ceramic is the most forgiving with heat, scratches and spills. Glass looks lightest in the room. Solid wood is warmest and can be refinished. Melamine and veneer keep the price lower and are easy to care for.
Can I see these tables in person?
Visit our Laguna Beach showroom to compare mechanisms, tops and finishes. Call ahead to ask what’s on the floor. We can also send finish samples and spec sheets.
