Sleeper Sofa vs Futon vs Daybed: Which Guest Bed Is Best?

Sleep comfort, sitting comfort, sizes, open depth and price — compared honestly, with real sleepers and sofa beds from our collection.

The short answer

Choose a sleeper sofa if it’s a sofa first and you want guests on a real mattress. Choose a futon-style sofa bed for a lighter, lower-priced piece you convert often. Choose a daybed for one guest and lounging, or a Murphy bed when someone sleeps there nightly.

Number one · The difference

Sleeper sofa vs futon vs daybed vs Murphy bed: what’s the difference?

All four give you a guest bed, but they do it differently. A sleeper sofa hides a separate mattress inside a regular sofa. A futon or sofa bed folds its own seat and back flat to become the bed. A daybed is a twin-size bed with a back and sides that you sit on by day. A Murphy bed folds a real mattress up into a wall cabinet.

Sleeper sofa (pull-out). Looks and sits like a normal sofa; a mechanism unfolds a mattress from under the seat. American Leather’s Comfort Sleeper® uses its patented Tiffany 24/7™ platform — no bars or springs under the mattress — with an 80-inch sleeping surface and sizes from Cot to King.

Futon and sofa bed (fold-flat). The seat and backrest are the bed: the back reclines or folds down to make a flat surface. Traditional futons put a loose mattress on a folding frame; modern sofa beds, like Innovation Living’s, use upholstered spring or foam seats instead. Lighter, simpler and usually less expensive.

Daybed. A twin mattress on a frame with a back and arms. It doesn’t convert — it’s always a bed — and many add a trundle for a second sleeper.

Murphy bed. A standard bed and mattress that fold vertically into a wall cabinet. Best sleep, but it is installed rather than moved, and offers no seating unless paired with a sofa.

The other two

Daybeds and Murphy beds, honestly.

Daybed vs sleeper sofa

A daybed is always a bed, so there’s nothing to unfold and the mattress can be a real twin. That makes it great for one guest, a kids’ room or a sunroom. As a sofa, though, it is deep — you’ll need a row of pillows behind you — and it only sleeps one unless it has a trundle. A sleeper sofa sits properly and sleeps two. We don’t carry indoor daybeds today; our Harbour daybeds are outdoor pieces.

Murphy bed vs sleeper sofa

A Murphy bed takes a standard mattress, so it’s the best choice when someone sleeps there every night and you need the floor back by day — a studio or a home office. It’s installed into a wall cabinet, though, and has no seating unless you add a sofa. A sleeper sofa is the better choice for occasional guests in a room that’s mostly for sitting. We don’t carry Murphy beds.

Number three · Care

Care tips for sleeper sofas and sofa beds.

  • Open the mechanism now and then, even with no guests, so it moves freely; follow the maker’s opening steps.
  • Take sofa cushions off before unfolding a pull-out sleeper, and never sit on the mechanism’s edge.
  • Use a mattress protector and fitted sheet on sleeper and sofa-bed mattresses.
  • Air the mattress before guests arrive, and vacuum it occasionally.
  • Wash detachable covers, like the Newilla’s and CozyPad’s, according to the care label.
  • Follow the care code for your leather or fabric — see leather vs fabric sofa.

Avoid these

Common sleeper sofa mistakes.

  1. Measuring only the closed sofa.Check the open depth — 86″ for a Gaines, 67″ for a Neru — plus walking room.
  2. Forgetting the delivery route.Sleepers are heavy. American Leather frames come apart for narrow doors; check others.
  3. Choosing the mattress by name alone.Comfort Sleeper mattresses differ in feel. Try them or ask which is included.
  4. Buying a futon for nightly use in a living room.Fold-flat sofa beds are firmer to sit on. If it’s a sofa first, choose a sleeper.
  5. Ignoring arm width.Wide arms add inches without adding mattress. Slim arms, like the Bentley’s, give more bed per inch.
  6. Expecting a daybed to seat like a sofa. It’s twin-bed deep. Add back pillows or choose a sleeper.

Guest bed questions

Frequently asked

Is a sleeper sofa better than a futon?

For a living room sofa that hosts guests now and then, yes: a sleeper sofa sits like a regular sofa and hides a separate mattress. A futon or fold-flat sofa bed is lighter, quicker to convert and costs less — better for studios, offices and frequent use. In our range, sofa beds start at $1,750 and sleeper sofas at $2,699.

What is the difference between a futon and a sofa bed?

A traditional futon is a loose mattress on a folding frame. A modern sofa bed works the same way — the seat and back fold flat to become the bed — but uses upholstered spring or foam seats, often with storage or washable covers.

Is a Murphy bed better than a sleeper sofa?

If someone sleeps there every night, a Murphy bed is usually better, because it takes a standard mattress and frees the floor by day. For occasional guests in a room used mostly for sitting, a sleeper sofa is more practical. A Murphy bed needs wall installation.

Is a daybed or a sleeper sofa better for a guest room?

A daybed is simpler and always ready for one guest, and a trundle adds a second. A sleeper sofa seats better and can sleep two in Queen or King sizes.

Are sleeper sofas comfortable to sleep on?

The better ones are. American Leather’s Comfort Sleeper uses a platform with no bars or springs under the mattress and an 80-inch sleeping surface, which American Leather says is 8 inches longer than a traditional sleeper, with three mattress options.

How much space does a sleeper sofa need when open?

About 80 to 90 inches from the wall for most full-size sleepers — the Gaines Comfort Sleeper is 86 inches deep open — plus walking room. Compact models such as the Gus Modern Neru open to 67 inches.

Can you sleep on a sofa bed every night?

Some are built for it; others are for occasional use. Check the listing and the mattress, and choose a firm, supportive surface. For nightly use in a small home, a Murphy bed is also worth considering.

Which is the best sleeper sofa brand?

We compare our two favorites, American Leather and Luonto, in our sleeper sofa brands guide. American Leather offers three systems — Today, Silver and Comfort — so you can choose by budget and mattress.
