Number one · Standard sizes
What are standard sofa dimensions?
84 to 96 inches long is the typical range for a three-seat sofa, with an overall depth of about 35 to 40 inches and a seat height near 18 inches. Loveseats run roughly 55 to 70 inches long. Overall depth and seat depth vary far more than length, so check both before you buy.
Length (width). Measured arm to arm. The Gus Modern Nord is 86″; the American Leather Brooklyn is 108″ overall, with 90″ of seat between the arms — arm width matters.
Overall depth. Front edge to the back. Most of our sofas list 34½–43½″; the Siena 2-Seat Grand is 44″ for a deep, lounging seat.
Height. Back heights of 29–34″ are common. Lower backs keep a room open; higher backs support your head.

Across the sofas in our collection that list dimensions (excluding sleepers and loveseats), the median length is 93¾″ (middle 80%: 82–107″, from 142 listings), the median depth 39″ (middle 80%: 34½–43½″), and the median seat height 18″ (middle 80%: 16–20″, from 105 listings).
Number two · For your room
What size sofa do I need for my room?
2/3 of the length of the wall it sits on is a good target for a sofa, so a 12-foot (144-inch) wall suits a sofa around 96 inches. Then check the floor: leave 30 to 36 inches for walkways and 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and coffee table, and make sure the depth still fits.
Tape the footprint on the floor before you order — length and depth — and walk around it. If the sofa floats in the room, the walkway behind it counts too. Our coffee table size guide covers the table in front.

Number three · Comfort
What seat depth and seat height are comfortable?
21 to 24 inches of seat depth suits most people who sit upright with feet on the floor; 25 to 28 inches is lounging depth, best with back pillows or for tucking your legs up. Seat height usually runs 17 to 20 inches. Shorter people tend to prefer shallower, lower seats; taller people deeper, higher ones.
| Seat feel | Seat depth | Seat height | From our collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upright, supportive | 21–23″ | 19–20″ | Brooklyn (21″ deep, 20″ high); Cooks (23″, 19″ or 21″ optional) |
| Balanced | 24–25″ | 17–18″ | Nord (24″, 17″); Boone (25″, 18″) |
| Deep lounge | 28″+ | 17″ | Siena 2-Seat Grand (28″, 17″) |
Seat depth is front edge to back cushion; seat height is floor to the top of the seat cushion. Figures are from each product listing.
Seat height also sets your coffee table height: aim for a table within 1–2″ of the seat. For pull-out options, see our sleeper sofa guide.
Number four · Sectionals
How big is a sectional?
120 inches is roughly the median long-side length of the sectionals in our collection, and most fall between about 102 and 164 inches. Measure both walls, subtract walkways, and check the return: the American Leather Cooks, for example, is 130 inches wide with a 92-inch return and 37-inch component depth.
L-shaped
The Barcelona Sectional is 140″ × 101″ with a 23″ seat depth and 17″ seat height.
Chaise
The Whiteline Henry is 116″ × 63″, with a 42″-deep seat on the chaise side.
Modular & compact
The Mobital Taut is 94″ × 38″ with a movable ottoman — sectional flexibility in a sofa footprint.
Custom
Many of our sectionals are configurable; see custom modern sectionals.
Across 124 sectionals in our collection that list an overall width, the median is 120½″, and the middle 80% run from 102″ to 164″.
Number five · Delivery
Will a sofa fit through my door?
3 openings decide whether a sofa gets in: the front door, any hallway or stair turn, and the room doorway. Measure the narrowest width and height of each. A sofa usually fits if its overall depth or height is smaller than the door width; if not, ask about removable legs, arms or a sectional that ships in pieces.
- Measure every opening.Width and height of each door, including the door stop, and the width of halls and stair landings.
- Compare the sofa’s depth and height.Sofas usually go through on their back or on end; the smaller of depth and height must clear the door width.
- Check the turns.Tight corners are where long sofas get stuck. Sectionals and modular pieces arrive as separate components, each smaller than the whole.
- Ask us before you order.Send your measurements and we’ll check them against the manufacturer’s specifications.
Quick math
The sofa formulas.
Worked example. A 13-foot (156″) wall suggests a sofa around 104″. The American Leather Siena 2-Seat Grand is 103″ × 44″ with a 17″ seat. Add a coffee table 15–17″ high, 16″ in front, and you need about 44″ + 16″ + the table depth before the walkway begins.

Sofa questions
Frequently asked
What is the standard size of a sofa?
A typical three-seat sofa is about 84 to 96 inches long, 35 to 40 inches deep and 30 to 34 inches high, with an 18-inch seat height. In our collection the median sofa is 93¾ inches long and 39 inches deep.
How long is a 3-seater sofa?
Usually about 84 to 96 inches. A 2-seater or loveseat is roughly 55 to 70 inches, and an apartment-size sofa 72 to 80 inches.
What is a good seat depth for a sofa?
21 to 24 inches works for most people who sit upright. 25 to 28 inches or more is lounging depth, best with back pillows or for curling up.
How do I know what size sofa to get?
Aim for about two-thirds of the wall length, leave 30 to 36 inches for walkways and 14 to 18 inches to the coffee table, and tape the footprint on the floor before you order.
How big is an L-shaped sectional?
Most run about 100 to 165 inches on the long side. In our collection the median is 120½ inches. Check both sides, the return depth and the component depth.
How do I know if a sofa will fit through my door?
Measure the width and height of every door, hallway and turn on the way in. The sofa’s overall depth or height needs to be smaller than the narrowest door width. If it isn’t, look for removable legs or a sectional that arrives in components.
