NAOS: Italian Action Design, and what ships in 2–4 weeks.
For four decades NAOS has built furniture around movement: glass and ceramic tops that glide, rotate and open with one gesture. Here is the story, the designers, how the mechanisms work, and every NAOS QuickShip piece we can deliver from New Jersey stock.
The story
Furniture as a “domestic aesthetic machine.”
NAOS began in the mid-1980s, when founder Mario Morbidelli set out, with a small group of designers, to make furniture whose common trait was movement. The first collection was about a dozen extendable tables and coffee tables, each transforming its shape through an original mechanism. NAOS calls the idea Action Design.
Today the company is led by Thomas Morbidelli, president and creative director. In his words, the mechanisms “allow a wide range of movements in the living space — not simply extending, but also shifting the tops in different directions, raising or dropping them, opening or closing them,” all with simple gestures. On some recent designs the mechanism is left visible, celebrated as what NAOS calls a “domestic aesthetic machine.”
Its favorite materials are chromed metal and stainless steel, finished in NAOS’s own galvanizing plants and paired with glass. Aluminum, wood and, increasingly, ceramic tops join them. “Everything is strictly and proudly Made in Italy,” the company says.

Looking for one specific use? Our coffee-to-dining tables guide covers NAOS’s expanding coffee tables, and our extendable dining tables guide compares NAOS with other extending tables for holiday hosting. This guide is the brand overview, with the full QuickShip list.
The designers
Four signatures behind the catalog.
NAOS has worked with a small circle of Italian designers since the beginning, including Denis Santachiara, Mario Merenco and, for seating, Giusy Mastro. These four names appear most often on the pieces we carry.
Today’s lead designer, who NAOS says “can perfectly translate the Naos philosophy into design.”

How it moves
Three families of motion.
Extending dining tables
Leaves or extensions slide out from under the top, often on a central gear (Galax, Quasar) or a lateral mechanism NAOS patented for tables like Arcadio and Latour. Closed, they’re everyday tables; open, they seat more.
Rotating coffee tables
Two or more tops, in glass, ceramic or stone, pivot on a shared axis. Close them for a compact footprint; swing them open to roughly double the surface for drinks and games.
Moving seats
NAOS chairs such as Babette and Juliette hide a gas spring under the seat, so the back flexes as you lean. QuickShip Glisette and Isotta are upholstered in ecoleather on chrome.

QuickShip or made to order?
One fixed configuration per listing, shipped from the New Jersey warehouse when in stock.
Your choice of size, top and finish, built in Italy. Best when you want a specific stone or metal.
Check the open size against the room: allow about 36″ around a dining table and 16–18″ between a coffee table and the sofa.
NAOS questions
Frequently asked
Where is NAOS furniture made?
In Italy. NAOS says everything is “strictly and proudly Made in Italy,” including the metal finishing in its own galvanizing plants.
How fast does NAOS QuickShip arrive?
NAOS QuickShip product pages say they typically ship in 2–4 weeks from the US (NJ) warehouse when in stock. We confirm stock and delivery timing before you order.
Can I change the finish on a QuickShip piece?
No. Each QuickShip listing is the configuration NAOS stocks in New Jersey. For other tops or finishes, order the made-to-order version, typically 12–16 weeks.
Who designs for NAOS?
NAOS works with a small group of designers including Andrea Casati, Arnaldo Gamba and Leila Guerra, Donato D’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi, and Yoshiharu Hatano.
Are NAOS glass tables practical for everyday dining?
NAOS pairs glass with chromed metal and stainless steel, and also offers ceramic tops, which resist heat and scratches. If you want a QuickShip table that isn’t all glass, look at Galax Rectangular (ceramic side tops) or Fusion (ceramic).
Can I see NAOS in person?
Visit our Laguna Beach showroom; call ahead to ask what’s on the floor. We can share NAOS finish samples and technical sheets.
