Transforming coffee-to-dining tables: Ozzio Italia & NAOS.
One table, two rooms. Ozzio’s gas-lift tables rise from coffee height to dining height and open with stored leaves. Its consoles unfold into banquet tables. NAOS coffee tables rotate open to nearly double their surface. This guide covers how each type works, real heights and dimensions, and what can arrive before the holidays.
Why transform
The coffee table that becomes a dinner for eight.
In a condo, a beach cottage or an open-plan great room, a permanent dining table can take up the space you’d rather live in. A transforming table gives that space back. It’s a coffee table on weeknights and a dining table when friends come over, without a second piece of furniture to store.
Ozzio Italia comes from the Brianza furniture district north of Milan and is best known for its transformable tables. NAOS, another Italian maker, calls its approach “Italian Action Design”: tops that rotate, fan out and lock in place.
A transforming table won’t replace a ten-foot banquet table. For that, see our guide to extendable dining tables for holiday hosting. But for six to eight guests in a small room, it does the job.
Mechanisms
Four ways a table changes shape.
1. Gas lift with stored leaves
A gas piston raises the top from coffee to dining height, and telescopic leaves stored inside slide out for length. The Ozzio Box and Newood are the best-known examples.
2. Lift and fold-open tops
The base lifts and a folded top opens out to dining width. Examples are the Ozzio Sydney, Mondial and Connubia’s Magic-J.
3. Console to dining
A slim wall console pulls out on telescopic runners and takes leaves stored in the frame. The Ozzio Golia goes from 14″ deep to 105″.
Heights compared
How low, how high, how big.
Most dining chairs are made for a table about 29–30″ high, and a typical coffee table sits around 15–18″. Here is where Ozzio’s transformable coffee tables start and finish, from the manufacturer’s published dimensions. The Newood lists dining length and height but not a coffee height, so it’s on the cards below.

Coffee to dining
Ozzio Italia (and two from Connubia).
These go all the way from coffee height to dining height. Ozzio tables are made to order in Italy, with white-glove delivery available. Connubia, part of the Calligaris Group, offers two lower-priced convertibles.

If you mostly want TV dinners or a laptop surface, rather than a full dinner party, Ozzio’s lift-tops rise to a comfortable working height without extending:

Console to dining
A slim console by the wall, a banquet table by dinner.
Consoles are the most space-efficient transforming tables. They sit against a wall in an entry or hallway, or behind a sofa, and open into the room when you need them. The deepest settings work as true dining tables, so add chairs to match: an extended A3 reaches 130″.
Plan for where the extended table will stand. The room needs space for the full length plus about 36″ around it for chairs.

NAOS coffee tables don’t rise to dining height. They transform outward: stacked glass, ceramic or stone tops swing open on synchronized mechanisms to nearly double the surface for drinks, games and grazing boards. Close them again for an everyday footprint that’s easy to walk around.
Most models can be configured in glass, ceramic, stone and coordinating metal finishes, made to order in Italy in about 12–16 weeks. For dining, NAOS’s extension dining tables use the same engineering at full scale.

Ozzio and most NAOS pieces are made to order in Italy, usually in 12–16 weeks, so ordering now is a plan for spring. NAOS also keeps QuickShip configurations in its New Jersey warehouse, and these typically ship in 2–4 weeks when in stock. How to choose
Six questions before you buy.
1. How many will you seat, and how often?
For dinners of six to eight in a small room, a coffee-to-dining or console table works well. For regular dinners of ten or more, a dedicated extension dining table is a better fit.
2. Does it reach dining height?
Check the top of the range against your chairs. Most dining chairs suit a 29–30″ table, and the heights table above shows each Ozzio model’s range.
3. Measure both modes.
Leave about 16–18″ between sofa and coffee table, and about 36″ around the table in dining mode for chairs.
4. Where do the leaves and chairs live?
Ozzio and Connubia store leaves in the table or frame. For chairs, consider folding chairs or Ozzio’s Cubix, a pouf with five seats inside.
5. Who will operate it?
Gas-assisted lifts do most of the work. Try the motion at our showroom before you choose.
6. Choose the surface.
Wood tops feel warm in a living room. Glass and ceramic suit a coffee table that also serves food. Many Ozzio and NAOS models are offered in several top finishes.

Frequently asked
Do transforming coffee tables really work as dining tables?
The Ozzio coffee-to-dining models do. For example, the Leonardo rises to 33¾″ and the Jolly to 29½″, and the Newood opens to 93″ for up to 8 chairs. NAOS coffee tables expand their surface but stay at coffee height.
Are they hard to raise?
Ozzio uses gas-assisted lifts. Ozzio describes the Box’s lift as millimeter-assisted, and the Metrino has a self-braking gas lift. We’re happy to demonstrate them at the showroom.
What is the difference between Ozzio and NAOS?
Both are Italian. Ozzio specializes in tables that change function, from coffee to dining and console to dining. NAOS specializes in mechanisms that change shape, with rotating and expanding tops on coffee and dining tables.
Can I get one before Thanksgiving?
NAOS QuickShip configurations typically ship in 2–4 weeks from New Jersey when in stock. Ask us about the quick-ship-friendly Newood configuration. Other Ozzio and NAOS pieces are made to order in Italy in about 12–16 weeks, which is a good fit for spring.
Will a transforming table seat as many people as a regular dining table?
