Number one · Seats by length
How many people does a dining table seat?
24 inches of table edge per person is the minimum for a comfortable place setting, and 30 inches is roomier — or needed for armchairs. So a 72-inch rectangular table seats six (three per side), a 96-inch table seats eight, and you can add one at each end if the table is at least about 36 inches wide.
| Table length | Per side at 24″ | Per side at 30″ | Total with ends | From our collection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60″ | 2 | 2 | 4–6 | — |
| 72″ | 3 | 2 | 6–8 | Ozzio 4×4, closed: 67″ (vendor: ≈6) or 78½″ (vendor: ≈8) |
| 84″ | 3 | 2 | 6–8 | Ozzio 4×4, extended to 88″ (vendor: ≈10) |
| 96″ | 4 | 3 | 8–10 | Ethnicraft Tacet (94½″); Kube Fyn (94″, vendor: 10–12+) |
| 108″ | 4 | 3 | 8–10 | Mobital Wave 103 (103″); Ethnicraft Mikado (105½″ or 110½″) |
| 120″ | 5 | 4 | 10–12 | Two tables end to end, or a long extension table |
Per-side counts are table length ÷ 24″ or ÷ 30″, rounded down; “with ends” adds one seat at each end. Legs, bases and armchairs can reduce these numbers. Where a maker states a seat count, it is shown as “vendor”.
Of the 469 dining tables in our collection that list a height, the median is 30″ (middle 80%: 29½–30″). Among rectangular tables, the median length is 78″ — a six-seat table with room for ends.
Number two · Round tables
What size round table seats 4, 6 or 8?
48 inches round seats four comfortably and five or six at a squeeze; 60 inches seats six; 72 inches seats eight. The math is the circumference (diameter × 3.14) divided by 24 to 30 inches per person. Round tables suit square rooms and conversation, but lose surface fast below 42 inches.
| Diameter | Seats (24–30″ each) | From our collection |
|---|---|---|
| 36″ | 4 (tight) | Connubia Dix Compact (35½″) |
| 42″ | 4–5 | — |
| 48″ | 5–6 | Connubia Dix Round (47¼″) |
| 54″ | 6–7 | Ozzio Big Round, closed (51″) |
| 60″ | 6–7 | Noir Corso (60″ — vendor: up to six); Ethnicraft Roller Max (59½″) |
| 72″ | 8–9 | Phillips Chuleta (72″) |
Seats are circumference ÷ 30″ to ÷ 24″, rounded. A 36″ table works for four only with small place settings. Vendor seat counts are noted where stated.
Across the 68 round dining tables in our collection that list a diameter, the median is 52″, and the middle 80% run from 42″ to 60″.
Number three · Room size
What size dining table fits my room?
36 inches of clearance from the table edge to walls or furniture is the minimum, and 42 to 48 inches lets people walk behind seated guests. Subtract 72 to 96 inches from each room dimension: a 12-by-15-foot room fits a table up to about 72 by 108 inches, or 48 by 84 inches with 48-inch walkways.
| Room (W × L) | Max table at 36″ clearance | Max table at 48″ clearance |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 ft (120 × 120″) | 48″ round or square | 24″ — too tight; aim for 42″ clearance and a 36″ round |
| 10 × 12 ft (120 × 144″) | 48″ × 72″ | 24″ × 48″ — choose a 36–42″ round |
| 12 × 14 ft (144 × 168″) | 72″ × 96″ (choose a 40–44″-wide table) | 48″ × 72″ |
| 12 × 16 ft (144 × 192″) | 72″ × 120″ (choose a 40–44″-wide table) | 48″ × 96″ |
| 14 × 18 ft (168 × 216″) | 96″ × 144″ | 72″ × 120″ |
Room dimension minus 2 × clearance. Include sideboards and other furniture as walls. Most rectangular tables are 36–44″ wide, so width rarely runs out first.
If a sideboard sits on one wall, measure from its front, not the wall — see our sideboard, buffet and credenza guide. For light above the table, see how to size and hang a dining room chandelier.
Number four · Height
How tall is a dining table, and what chair height goes with it?
30 inches is the standard dining table height, and 28 to 30 inches covers nearly all of them. Pair it with chairs that have a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches, leaving roughly 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the tabletop. With armchairs, the arms must clear the table apron.
Seat-to-table gap. A 30″ table with an 18″ seat leaves 12″ — enough for most people’s legs. The Connubia New York Chair lists a 17¾″ seat height.
Armchairs and aprons. Check the table’s leg clearance — the space under the apron — against the chair’s arm height. The Noir Corso lists 27″ of clearance, so the Connubia Tuka armchair (25⅝″ arm height) slides under it.
Counter and bar height are a different system (about 36″ and 42″). See our bar and counter stool sizing guide.

Across 92 dining chairs in our collection that list a seat height, the median is 18″, and the middle 80% run from 17″ to 18½″ — a 12″ gap under a 30″ table.
Number five · Width
How wide should a dining table be?
36 inches is about the narrowest a rectangular table can be with place settings on both sides, and 40 to 44 inches is more comfortable, with room for serving dishes down the middle. Tables much wider than about 48 inches make it hard to talk or pass food across, unless the table is round or square.
The Ethnicraft Tacet is 39½″ wide; the Mobital Wave 103 and Kube Fyn are 44″ and 43½″. For large square rooms, the Ethnicraft Mikado also comes 54½″ wide — better for an eight-person table you can reach across from the ends.
Extension tables
Two sizes in one.
If you host a few times a year, size the table for everyday use and let an extension handle the rest — then check the room clearance at the open size. The Ozzio 4×4 goes from 35.5″ × 67″ (about six seats, per Ozzio) to 46.5″ × 88″ (about ten). The Ozzio Big Round goes from a 51″ round to a 51″ × 65″ oval to a 65″ round, seating roughly six to ten.

Quick math
The dining table formulas.
Worked example. A 12 × 16-foot room (144″ × 192″) with 42″ of clearance leaves room for a table up to 60″ × 108″. The Ethnicraft Tacet (94½″ × 39½″ × 30″) fits inside that limit, with about 48½″ of clearance at each end ((192″ − 94½″) ÷ 2) and 52″ at each side. Three chairs per side at 30″ each plus one at each end seats eight.

Dining table questions
Frequently asked
What size dining table seats 6?
A rectangular table about 72 inches long and 36 to 40 inches wide, or a round table about 54 to 60 inches across.
What size dining table seats 8?
A rectangular table about 96 inches long with four per side, or about 72 to 84 inches long with three per side and one at each end, or a round table about 72 inches across.
How much space do you need around a dining table?
At least 36 inches from the table edge to walls or furniture, and 42 to 48 inches where people walk behind seated guests.
What size round table seats 4?
A 42 to 48-inch round table seats four comfortably. A 36-inch round works for four only with small place settings.
What is the standard height of a dining table?
About 30 inches; nearly all dining tables are 28 to 30 inches high. In our collection the median is 30 inches.
How much space per person at a dining table?
24 inches of table edge per person is the minimum; 30 inches is more comfortable and is a good allowance for armchairs.
What size dining table for a 12 by 12 room?
With 36 inches of clearance on every side, a 12 by 12-foot room fits a table up to about 72 inches square in theory; in practice a 48 to 60-inch round or square table, or a 72-inch rectangle about 40 inches wide, leaves more comfortable walkways.
