Coffee table sizing guide
Coffee table size & height: how big, how tall, how far.
The three measurements that make a coffee table feel right — height, length and distance from the sofa — with a sizing chart for 72″ to 108″ sofas and the tables we’d pick from our own collection.
In this guide
Number one · How tall
How tall should a coffee table be?
16 to 18 inches is the standard coffee table height, and the best rule is to stay within 1 to 2 inches of your sofa’s seat height. Most sofas sit at 17 to 19 inches, so a 16–18″ table lines up. Deep, low lounge sofas pair better with tables around 12 to 15 inches.
Match the seat, not the arm. Measure from the floor to the top of the seat cushion — not the arm or back. A table at or just below that line is easy to reach from a seated position and keeps the view across the room open.
Go lower for lounging. Low-slung sofas with seats around 15–16″ look best with a table a couple of inches lower still. The Ethnicraft Boomerang lists 29 cm (about 11½″) and the Mobital Onix 39″ 13″.
Taller than the seat? Only if you eat or work there. A lift-top, like the BDI Reveal 1192, sits at 15½″ and raises the top when you need a laptop height.

We checked the 332 coffee tables in our collection that list an overall height. The median is 16″, and the middle 80% run from 12½″ to 18″. For comparison, the 105 sofas in our sofa collection that list a seat height have a median of 18″.
Number two · How big
What size coffee table do I need?
2/3 of your sofa’s length is the classic coffee table size — about 56 to 60 inches for an 84–90-inch sofa. Keep the depth around half the length or a little less, leave walking room on every open side, and if the result crowds the room, size down rather than up.
Length. The two-thirds rule keeps the table from looking lost in front of a long sofa or overwhelming a short one. Anywhere from half to three-quarters of the sofa length can work; two-thirds is the safest target.
Depth. Most rectangular tables are 20–32″ deep. Narrow tables (about 20–24″) leave more legroom in tight rooms; deeper tables suit sectionals and wide seating groups where people reach in from several sides.
Visual weight. A glass or open-base table can be bigger on paper than a solid block and still feel lighter. The Copeland Entwine puts a 42″ round glass top on a walnut base, so it reads smaller than a 42″ solid drum.
Across those 332 coffee tables, the longest side has a median of 44″, and the middle 80% span 27″ to 55″. If your sofa is 90″ or longer, look at the long end of the collection — tables like the 61½″ Ethnicraft PI and 62½″ Moes Jocko.
Sizing chart
Coffee table size chart by sofa length.
Start from your sofa’s overall width (end to end, including arms). The target is two-thirds of that; the range is half to three-quarters.
| Sofa length | Target table length (⅔) | Workable range (½–¾) | From our collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| 72″ (apartment sofa) | ≈ 48″ | 36–54″ | Mobital Onix 39″ round |
| 80″ | ≈ 53″ | 40–60″ | BDI Reveal 1192 (48″) |
| 84″ | ≈ 56″ | 42–63″ | Whiteline Iris Rectangle (55″) |
| 90″ | ≈ 60″ | 45–67″ | Ethnicraft PI (61½″) |
| 96″ | ≈ 64″ | 48–72″ | Moes Jocko (62½″) |
| 108″+ | ≈ 72″ | 54–81″ | One long table, or two tables side by side |
| L-shaped sectional | 36–48″ round or square | — | Copeland Entwine (42″ round) |
Calculated with the two-thirds rule. Product lengths are each listing’s stated width.
Number three · How far
How far should a coffee table be from the couch?
14 to 18 inches between the front edge of the sofa and the coffee table is the comfortable range — close enough to set down a drink without leaning, far enough for knees and feet. Leave 30 to 36 inches of walkway on any side people walk past.
Closer: 14″
Good for low tables, small rooms and anyone who uses the table for drinks and books all evening.
Farther: 18″
Better with deep sofas, recliners and taller tables, where knees come forward when you sit or stand.
Walkways: 30–36″
The open sides of the table are usually a path through the room. 30″ is tight; 36″ lets two people pass.
Chairs opposite
Apply the same 14–18″ to accent chairs across the table, so everyone can reach it.
Number four · Shape
Round, oval or rectangular?
36 to 48 inches round or square is usually the best fit in front of an L-shaped sectional, because people reach in from two sides. Rectangles and long ovals suit a straight sofa, and ovals soften corners in busy walkways or homes with small children.
Rectangle
The default for a straight sofa. Matches the sofa’s line and gives the most surface. Try the Iris Rectangle (55″ × 32″).
Oval & organic
Same footprint as a rectangle, with no corners to bump. The Jocko is a 62½″ oval-shaped aluminum top.
Round
Best for sectionals, square rooms and chair groupings. The Onix 39″ is Nero Marquina marble.
Square
Fills the corner of a deep sectional. Look for 36–48″ square, such as many in our collection.
Quick math
The coffee table formulas.
Worked example. The Gus Modern Nord Sofa lists 86″ wide with a 17″ seat height. Two-thirds of 86″ is about 57″, and the table should be about 15–17″ high. The Whiteline Iris Rectangle (55″ × 32″ × 15″) lands within 2″ on both counts. Set it 16″ from the sofa and you need about 32″ + 16″ = 48″ of depth in front of the sofa before the walkway starts.

When the coffee table also has to be a desk or a dining table.
If you eat or work on the sofa, the 16–18″ rule still applies to the table at rest; a mechanism takes care of the rest. The Ozzio Radius lists 12½″ high closed and 25½″ high open, with the depth growing from 26¾″ to 40″. Ozzio’s Bellagio goes from 12.6″ to 25.6″ high.
Plan the 14–18″ gap for the closed size, then check there’s room to pull the open table toward you. Our guide to transforming coffee-to-dining tables from Ozzio and Naos compares the mechanisms.

Coffee table questions
Frequently asked
How tall should a coffee table be?
16 to 18 inches is standard. Aim for 1 to 2 inches below your sofa seat height, measured to the top of the seat cushion. Low lounge sofas pair better with tables around 12 to 15 inches high.
What are standard coffee table dimensions?
A typical rectangular coffee table is about 36 to 60 inches long, 20 to 32 inches deep and 16 to 18 inches high. Round tables usually run 30 to 48 inches across. In our collection the median height is 16 inches and the median length 44 inches.
How far should a coffee table be from the couch?
Leave 14 to 18 inches between the front of the sofa and the coffee table, and 30 to 36 inches of walkway on any side people walk past.
How big should a coffee table be compared to the sofa?
About two-thirds of the sofa’s length. For an 84-inch sofa that is about 56 inches; for a 96-inch sofa, about 64 inches. Anywhere between half and three-quarters of the sofa length can work.
What size coffee table goes with a sectional?
A 36 to 48-inch round or square table usually works best in the corner of an L-shaped sectional, because people reach in from two sides. Keep 14 to 18 inches from both seat fronts.
Can a coffee table be taller than the sofa seat?
It can, but it will feel like a dining surface. If you want to work or eat at the coffee table, a lift-top keeps the table at a normal 15 to 18-inch height at rest and raises the top only when needed.
