Number one · Standard height
What is the standard desk height?
29 to 30 inches is the standard height for a fixed desk, measured from the floor to the top of the work surface. It is set for an average adult in an adjustable office chair, so most people can make it work by adjusting the chair first, then adding a footrest or keyboard tray if needed.
Nearly every fixed desk we carry follows this convention. The BDI Luma 6762 S is 29″ high; the Copeland Odin, Ethnicraft Bok and Ethnicraft Boomerang are 30″. What varies far more is depth and width — which decides whether your monitor, keyboard and paperwork actually fit.
Of the 74 fixed-height desks in our collection that list an overall height, the median is 30″, and the middle 80% sit between 29″ and 30″. If a fixed desk doesn’t fit you, the fix is usually the chair, a keyboard tray, or a sit-stand desk — not a different fixed height.
Number two · Your height
How do I find the right desk height for me?
1 measurement matters most: your seated elbow height. Sit with feet flat, thighs roughly level and shoulders relaxed, bend your elbows to about 90 degrees, and measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. Your keyboard surface should sit at or just below that line.
- Set the chair first. Adjust the seat so your feet rest flat and your thighs are close to level.
- Measure your elbow. Floor to the underside of a relaxed forearm, elbow bent about 90°.
- Compare to the desk. If the desk is higher than your elbow, raise the chair and add a footrest, or type on a keyboard tray.
- Check legroom. Your thighs and the chair arms need to clear the underside of the desk or apron.
Desks with a built-in keyboard tray or drawer, like the Copeland Catalina and BDI Sequel 20 Compact, lower the keyboard below the 29–30″ top. The Catalina lists 23.938″ of floor clearance below the desk, so measure your seated thigh height against it.

Number three · Depth & width
How deep and wide should a desk be?
24 inches deep is the practical minimum for a laptop desk, and about 28 to 30 inches leaves room for a monitor plus a keyboard in front of it. For width, plan roughly 40 to 48 inches for a laptop, 55 to 63 inches for one monitor and paperwork, and 60 to 72 inches for two monitors.
Laptop & writing
20–24″ deep. The Whiteline Elm Desk Small is 27″ × 22″ — a true compact desk.
One monitor
About 28–30″ deep so the screen sits back from your eyes. The Bok is 55″ × 28″.
Two monitors
60–72″ wide. The Luma 6762 S gives 66″ × 28″ of glass work surface.
Paper & drawings
Go deep: the Boomerang Desk is 63″ × 33″.

Number four · Sit-stand
What height range should a standing desk have?
25 to 51 inches is the range of the Copeland Odin Sit-Stand Desk, and a span that wide covers most adults both sitting and standing. To check any sit-stand desk, measure your seated and standing elbow heights; both numbers should fall inside the desk’s range, with a little margin at each end.
Use the same elbow rule standing as sitting: shoulders relaxed, forearms level, keyboard at or just below the elbow. A sit-stand desk is also the simplest answer when two people of different heights share one desk.

How much space do you need around a desk?
36 inches of clear floor behind the desk is a comfortable minimum for rolling an office chair back and standing up, and more is better if people walk behind you. Leave about 30 inches on the side of any drawer pedestal or credenza you need to open while seated.
If the desk floats in the room facing out, a low credenza behind it adds storage at a reachable height — see our sideboard, buffet and credenza guide for sizes, and BDI’s home-office furniture for matching pieces.
Quick math
The desk formulas.
Worked example. Two monitors side by side usually need 50″ or more of width on their own. The BDI Luma 6762 S gives 66″ × 28″ at 29″ high, leaving room for a lamp and paperwork beside the screens. Plan 28″ of desk plus 36″ behind the chair: about 64″ from the wall to the nearest obstacle.

Desk questions
Frequently asked
What is the standard height of a desk?
Most fixed desks are 29 to 30 inches high, measured from the floor to the top of the desk. In our collection the median fixed desk height is 30 inches.
How tall should my desk be for my height?
Measure your seated elbow height with your feet flat and elbows bent at about 90 degrees. Your keyboard should sit at or just below that height. If a 29 to 30-inch desk is too high, raise the chair and use a footrest or a keyboard tray; if it is too low, consider a sit-stand desk.
How deep should a desk be?
At least 24 inches for a laptop, and about 28 to 30 inches for a desktop monitor plus keyboard. Go deeper, 30 to 33 inches, if you spread out drawings or paperwork.
What size desk do I need for two monitors?
Plan for 60 to 72 inches of width and about 28 to 30 inches of depth. The BDI Luma 6762 S, for example, is 66 inches wide and 28 inches deep.
What height range should a standing desk have?
Wide enough to reach both your seated and standing elbow heights. The Copeland Odin Sit-Stand Desk adjusts electronically from 25 to 51 inches.
How much space do I need behind a desk chair?
About 36 inches of clear floor behind the desk lets you roll the chair back and stand up comfortably. Leave more if it is also a walkway.
