Number one · Open walls
How high should you hang art?
57 to 60 inches from the floor to the center of the artwork is the standard rule for an open wall, roughly average eye level. Galleries use it so every piece lines up. When art hangs above furniture, measure from the furniture instead: the gap between the two matters more than the center height.
- Mark the center.Measure 57–60″ up from the floor and mark the wall lightly.
- Find the hanging point.Measure from the top of the piece to its taut wire, cleat or bracket. Add half the artwork’s height to your center mark, then subtract that distance.
- Use the right hardware.Heavy glass, metal and sculptural pieces need anchors or studs rated for their weight; follow the maker’s mounting instructions.
- Step back.Check it from where you usually sit or stand before making the final hole.
Number two · Above a sofa
How high to hang art above a sofa?
8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame keeps art and sofa reading as one group without heads bumping the piece. Size the art or grouping to about two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa’s width — roughly 60 to 68 inches over a 90-inch sofa.
Most sofa backs are 29–34″ high, so the bottom of the art usually lands around 37–44″ from the floor — lower than the 57–60″ rule would put it. That’s intentional: art that floats too high above the sofa looks disconnected.
Wide, panoramic pieces work well here. The Insigne Tree of Life Mega Glass Wall Art is three tempered-glass panels, in size options including 84″ × 43″ and 107″ × 55″. For sofa sizes, see our sofa and sectional dimensions guide.

Number three · Above a bed
How high to hang art above a bed?
8 to 12 inches above the top of the headboard is a comfortable gap for art over a bed, close enough to connect, high enough that you will not hit it sitting up. Aim for about two-thirds of the bed’s width: around 40 inches over a 60-inch queen, or a grouping of smaller pieces.
Above a bed, safety matters: choose lightweight pieces or secure mounting, and avoid loose glass frames or deep sculptures where you sit up.
A set of shallow pieces can span the width without a single large frame. The Phillips Collection Galvanized Circle wall decor is four 22″ discs, 1–4″ deep. Pair the wall with nightstands sized to your mattress.

Number four · Above a sideboard
How high to hang art or a mirror above a sideboard or console?
6 to 10 inches above the top of a sideboard, console or dresser is the usual gap for the bottom of art or a mirror. Size the piece to about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture’s width, and leave room for lamps or objects on the top so they do not cover the frame.
A mirror above a long sideboard reflects light across a dining room; a sculpture adds depth. With a 30–34″ sideboard, the bottom of the piece lands at roughly 36–44″ — again below the open-wall rule.
Our sideboard, buffet and credenza guide covers the furniture side, and our lighting guide covers lamps and sconces beside the art.

Cheat sheet
Art hanging height cheat sheet.
| Where | Hang it | How wide | From our collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open wall, hallway | Center 57–60″ from the floor | To suit the wall | Ozzio Raggio Mirror (37¾″ × 67″ rectangular) |
| Above a sofa | Bottom 8–10″ above the sofa back | ⅔–¾ of the sofa width | Insigne Tree of Life (84″ × 43″ option) |
| Above a bed | Bottom 8–12″ above the headboard | About ⅔ of the bed width | Phillips Galvanized Circles (4 × 22″) |
| Above a sideboard, console or dresser | Bottom 6–10″ above the top | ⅔–¾ of the furniture width | Ozzio Sea Mirror (47¼″ × 47¼″) |
| Grouping | Center the whole group at 57–60″ | Treat the group as one piece | 2–4″ between pieces |
These are designer rules of thumb, not building codes. Product sizes are each listing’s stated dimensions.
Number five · How big
What size art goes above a sofa or bed?
2/3 to 3/4 of the width of the furniture below is the classic size for art, a mirror or a grouping. Over an 84-inch sofa that is about 56 to 63 inches; over a 72-inch sideboard, about 48 to 54 inches. Smaller pieces look lost; a piece wider than the furniture looks crowded.
One large piece
Calm and modern. A wide panorama or a single sculpture like the 48″ Phillips Square Root.
A pair
Two matching pieces with a 2–4″ gap, sized so the pair spans ⅔–¾ of the furniture.
A set
Repeated forms, like the four 22″ Galvanized Circles, read as one composition.
A mirror
Mirrors follow the same width rule; see the mirror collection.
Across 176 mirrors in our collection that list a width, the median is 39″, and the middle 80% run from 16½″ to 48″ — so most fit the two-thirds rule over a 60–72″ piece of furniture.
Number six · Groupings
How far apart should pictures be in a grouping?
2 to 4 inches between frames keeps a grouping or gallery wall reading as one piece; much wider gaps make it look scattered. Lay the arrangement out on the floor or with paper templates first, then hang the whole group so its center sits at 57 to 60 inches, or follow the furniture gap.
Number seven · Mirrors
How high should you hang a mirror?
57 to 60 inches to the center works for a decorative mirror, the same as art. For a mirror you use, check that the tallest and shortest people in the house can see their faces, and above furniture use the same 6 to 10-inch gap. A full-length standing mirror avoids the question entirely.
The Modus Townsend Solid Wood Mirror (42″ × 36″) has preinstalled keyhole brackets for wall mounting. The BDI Continuum 3472 is a 64½″-tall standing mirror that tilts and spins 360°, with no wall hanging at all.
Quick math
The hanging formulas.
Worked example. The Phillips Square Root wall sculpture is 48″ × 48″ and 11″ deep. Over a 72″-wide, 30″-high console, it’s exactly two-thirds of the width. Hung 8″ above the top, its bottom sits at 38″ and its center at 62″ — a little above the 57–60″ rule, which is fine above furniture. At 11″ deep, keep it out of tight walkways.

Hanging questions
Frequently asked
How high should you hang a picture?
Hang it so the center is 57 to 60 inches from the floor on an open wall. Above furniture, leave a 6 to 10-inch gap between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the art instead.
How high should art be above a couch?
About 8 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.
How high to hang a picture over a bed?
About 8 to 12 inches above the top of the headboard, with secure mounting and nothing breakable where you sit up.
How big should art be over a sofa?
About two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa’s width. Over an 84-inch sofa, that is roughly 56 to 63 inches, as one piece or a grouping.
How high should a mirror be hung above a console table?
Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the console and the bottom of the mirror, and choose a mirror about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the console.
What is the 57 inch rule for hanging art?
It means hanging art so its center is 57 inches from the floor, roughly average eye level. Many designers use 57 to 60 inches. It applies to open walls and groupings; above furniture, the gap to the furniture matters more.
How far apart should you hang pictures?
About 2 to 4 inches between frames in a grouping or gallery wall, so the pieces read as one composition.
