Number one · How tall

How tall should a nightstand be?

24 to 28 inches is a typical nightstand height, but the rule that matters is relative: keep the top within about 2 inches of the top of your mattress, level or slightly below. That puts a glass of water, phone or book within easy reach when you are lying down, without reaching up or down.

Why mattress height, not a standard. Bed heights vary by more than a foot. A low platform bed with a slim mattress can top out under 18″; a bed with a box spring and a pillow-top can be 28″ or more. The same nightstand can’t suit both.

A little lower is fine; much higher isn’t. A top a couple of inches below the mattress is easy to reach. A top well above it means reaching up — and a lamp that glares into your eyes.

Lamps change the picture. If you read in bed, the lamp shade’s bottom edge should land around shoulder height when you sit up. A taller nightstand pairs with a shorter lamp, and the reverse. See our modern lighting guide.

Our range

We checked the 136 nightstands in our collection that list an overall height. The median is 25¼″, and the middle 80% run from 19″ to 27½″ — so there’s a real choice at both the low and the tall end.

Number two · Measure

How do I measure my bed for a nightstand?

2 numbers set your nightstand height: the height of the bed frame to the top of its deck or slats, plus your mattress thickness. A 12-inch frame and a 12-inch mattress put the mattress top at 24 inches, so look for a nightstand between about 22 and 26 inches tall.

  1. Measure the made bed.Floor to the top of the mattress, with any topper and bedding on. This is the simplest and most accurate number.
  2. Or add it up.Frame or foundation height + mattress thickness + topper. Use this before your new bed or mattress arrives.
  3. Subtract 0–2″.That’s your target nightstand height. Allow ±2″ more if you love a particular piece.
  4. Check the headboard.Make sure the nightstand isn’t wider than the space beside a wide headboard or wings.

Height chart

24″ 22–24″ ALF Tullia (24″)
26″ 24–26″ Copeland Berkeley (26″)
28″+ 26–28″ Copeland Astrid (26⅝″)

Targets use the “level to 2 inches below” rule. Product heights are each listing’s stated overall height.

Number three · Width & depth

How wide and deep should a nightstand be?

20 to 28 inches wide covers most nightstands, and the middle of that range suits a queen or king. As a rule of thumb, choose narrower pieces (about 19–22 inches) in tight rooms or beside full beds, wider ones (about 26–30 inches) beside a king, and keep depth near 14–20 inches so it does not block the path.

Narrow & shallow

The Spindle is 22″ wide and just 14″ deep — useful where the path beside the bed is tight.

Compact square

The Azur is 19″ × 17½″ and the Kava 9681 20″ × 20½″, with a top that slides out 8″.

Wide storage

The Anna Large is 30″ wide; the Tullia 28″, with a built-in light.

Proportion

Next to a tall or wide headboard, a nightstand in the 24–28″ range keeps the wall from looking under-furnished.

Our range

Across the 136 nightstands in our collection with stated dimensions, width has a median of 26″, and the middle 80% run from 20″ to 28″.

Number four · How far

How far should a nightstand be from the bed?

2 to 4 inches between the nightstand and the bed frame is a comfortable gap: close enough to reach, far enough to tuck in sheets and avoid bumping the frame. Then leave about 30 inches of clear floor along the side of the bed you get in and out of.

If the room can’t fit a full nightstand plus that walkway, a shallow or narrow piece (like the 14″-deep Spindle), a side table, or a wall-mounted light instead of a lamp gives you back space.

Quick math

The nightstand formulas.

Mattress topFrame + mattress + topperOr simply measure the made bed.
NightstandMattress top − 0–2″Level with the mattress, or a little below.
Gap2–4″ from the frameRoom to make the bed without bumping.
WalkwayAbout 30″On the side of the bed you use.

Worked example. A bed frame with a 14″ deck and a 12″ mattress puts the mattress top at 26″, so the target is 24–26″. The Copeland Berkeley (23¾″ W × 21⅞″ D × 26″ H) lands level with the mattress; the ALF Tullia (24″ H) sits 2″ below.

Nightstand questions

Frequently asked

How tall should a nightstand be?

Level with the top of your mattress or up to about 2 inches below it. For most beds that works out to roughly 24 to 28 inches, but low platform beds often need a nightstand around 18 to 21 inches.

Should a nightstand be higher or lower than the bed?

Slightly lower or level is best. A nightstand that is much higher than the mattress means reaching up to it and usually puts the lamp too high.

What is the standard nightstand height?

There isn’t one fixed standard, but most nightstands are 24 to 28 inches tall. In our collection the median is 25¼ inches, and the middle 80% run from 19 to 27½ inches.

How wide should a nightstand be for a queen bed?

About 20 to 26 inches is a comfortable range beside a queen, as long as you keep roughly 30 inches of walking space beside the bed. Beside a king, 24 to 30 inches looks more in proportion.

How far should a nightstand be from the bed?

About 2 to 4 inches from the bed frame, so you can reach it easily and still tuck in the sheets.

Do nightstands have to match the bed?

No. Matching height to the mattress matters far more than matching the finish. Mixed wood and lacquer pieces can look deliberate if the heights and proportions line up.
